A great cultural experience

Ultimately a very enjoyable cultural experience, with no tournaments happening the practice was the next best thing. Interesting to see warm up routines and practice bouts at very close range and worth getting up early for. However, the booking experience was varied as despite booking over a month ahead, getting confirmation of availability and taking our money the operator informed us a couple of days before that there were no longer any places and they were cancelling our tour. However, following some firm emails our places were "restored" and everything was fine. Viator need to get this sorted with the provider as I have noted some other comments were people had similar experiences.

You have to sit very still and quiet, it was a privilege to watch the wrestlers train, they put so much work into their session.

I absolutely enjoyed the morning practice. It was fascinating to get a glimpse into this sport and culture. I would advise on reading up a bit beforehand if you’re new to the sport as not much is being said while training is on. We had an opportunity for photos afterwards, which was great.

Lacks information

It is interesting to see the training and hard work of the wrestlers but it would be much better if they had someone to explain what was going on and why!

Easy to arrange.. good instructions of where to meet and how to get there. Once arrived very easy to view and see these great sumo wrestlers in training for 90 minutes and good photo opportunities. Expensive but well worth it and a must do. Enjoy it while you are there.

Sumo practice is brilliant!

Highly recommend doing this if you can't see an actual tournament. It gives you a great insight into the training regime and the ethos. You have to be totally silent throughout the practice, so you are reliant on the tour guide passing around notes to explain what is going on. It lasted c. 90 minutes and I loved it!

WOW! Something original!

I like it a lot! It's something you can see only in Japan. When I was there there were no competitions (they run only in certain period during the year) so We assisted to the training. I think this is good because you can feel the fatigue the fighters do in this sport! Be prepared to be in a very "basic" environment, they are very nice at the end you can also take a picture with these big fighters! It's an experience that I would recommend!

Real experience

Refreshing to be a fly on the wall to a training where the event is not catered for tourists. The wrestlers are going through their routines, sparring and then doing head-knocking, body slamming marches. Learned so much from people who said so little. Read background to get the most out it before you arrive because there’s no briefing before or after the training.
