Rome Catacombs Tour: with St Clement & Temple of Mithras (Small-Group of 7)

This tour was super-interesting. We learned about early Christian symbolism and practices and got a thorough chance to explore a 'layered' church, as buildings were often built on top of each other. Guide was knowledgeable and very pleasant. My only suggestion would be to provide better instructions on the meeting point. Both parties that were on this tour were looking for the guide at a different spot, though we got it figured out eventually.

I will start off by saying that I'm usually not a big fan of guided tours: I like to do things at my own pace. Nevertheless, I'm really happy that my Mom and I signed up for this guided tour because it was awesome! We didn't have any problems finding the meeting point for the start of the tour and it was great to be in a small group. This gave us a chance to ask the guide any follow up questions about the catacombs and each person in the group could really take in the sights that he/she was seeing. The description of the tour says that it lasts about 3 hours and I'd think that it might scare some people away. No need to worry about that. There's so much to see that the time spent on this tour really flies by. I think our group got lucky because we got to all of the three stops because the larger groups got there: this gave us a chance to look at things closely and perhaps spend a little more time at certain stops. Our tour guide, Beatrice, was awesome. Great personality and very informative. You could tell that she's passionate about the history of her city and is happy to share it with others. If you are planning a trip to Rome (and you should because it's totally worth it), I'd highly recommend doing this tour in a small group. It's better to visit these specific sites with a guide who's educated in the subject. You'll be able to learn more and fully appreciate the things that you are seeing around you and their significance. Once again, thank you very much to our awesome tour guide and to the city of Rome for this wonderful experience!

This is a wonderful tour, so interesting, you can imagine yourself stepping back in time and experiencing living life many centuries ago. Our tour leader was brilliant.

Our last tour in Rome was on May 23 with Vincenzo. He was very knowledgable and well-spoken, We went to the Catacombs of Domitillo. The small underground chapel was interesting and the 30 minutes we spent looking at the catacombs was informative, but only 4 of our group of 5 could see what he was pointing out. Perhaps I expected more, but there wasn’t much to see. We spent most of our time in the Basilica of St. Clemente that was fascinating, but even more in the Temple of Mithras below which seemed to mean the most to our guide. The guide was good, but the tour itself just didn’t have that much of interest compared with other experiences in Rome over 10 days. Perhaps I should have read more about the catacombs, but I expected to learn more about the lives of the people interred there. All the remains were removed centuries ago.

Francesca was an excellent guide. Very good English, knowledgeable about the sites (which are amazing, must see), the city, and its history. They ran the tour even though there were only 2 of us. When I called the tour operator with a question, the person who answered the phone spoke good English, too. None of the sites allow photographs, so leave the big cameras in the hotel safe.
