Overview

Take a day out of your Rome vacation to get acquainted with Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii. This day trip to Pompeii includes a steady-paced hike up Mt. Vesuvius (summer only) or a visit to Naples when Vesuvius is closed in winter, plus a pizza lunch and a tour of the UNESCO-listed digs at Pompeii. Hear the history from a local guide and admire artifacts that date back to the infamous Mt. Vesuvius eruption of AD 79.
  • Day trip to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii from Rome with an expert guide
  • Hike up the side of the volcano and walk along its ridge, gazing into the crater
  • Drink in dramatic views over the Bay of Naples
  • Experience the world-famous Neapolitan pizza
  • From late November to March, take a guided tour of Naples instead of a hike on Mt. Vesuvius

Why Travelers Choose This Tour

A pizza lunch in Naples is included in the price of this tour—a rare perk.
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area, and your guide shows them as you travel.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. From your Pompeii tour guide, hear about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing followed by a Neapolitan pizza lunch.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20 to March 31. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.

City Wonders

Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places, as the licensed guide paints a vivid picture of life in the city’s final days. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii as one of the site’s own officially licensed guides will show you around the city, painting a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash. In addition to the guided portion of your tour, you’ll have time for wandering and picture-taking in Pompeii – followed by an authentic Neapolitan pizza lunch.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.

Simply amazing!! Angela was very knowledgeable, and served as the perfect travel guide from Rome to Pompeii. My young daughters enjoyed the interactions with her, and they were engage most of the day. I have to say this tour was absolutely amazing, my girls were disappointed to realize that we didn’t have a tour booked the next day. There were short stops, and it was a perfect first trip to Naples, and Pompeii. Certainly made us want to spend more time in the south, and hopeful figure out how to travel again with Angela who is full of cultural information, and some amazing historical insights, and some funny Italian insights.

Our guide, Angela, was absolutely amazing. Super friendly and knew about literally everything. She was really enthousiastic and you could really notice that. We had a great day in Napels and it was fantastic! We saw lots of places and then drove to Pompeii. Our guide there was also amazing. You could ask him whatever question and he knew the answer. The day of this tour must have been out best day ever during the vacation. I definitely recommend you taking this trip if you visit Rome. This place HAS to be on your bucketlist!

Pompeii ruins and Naples

The visit to the Pompeii ruins was one for the books. Our visit to Naples was short but equally memorable. We thank our tour guide, Matteo, who was very good and accommodating. We likewise express our gratitude to our local tour guide in Pompeii, Enrico, who was funny and very good. We recommend this tour.

A perfect day. Giacomo was our tour guide for most of the trip and he was utterly delightful -- so charming, funny and informative. We had a great time on the bus trip and the pizza was great! Then in Pompeii itself, our guide, Enrico, was really great, showing us the amazing archeological site. Pompeii does not disappoint. On the way back to Rome, Giacomo regaled us with stories and gave some really good advice about great stuff to see and do in Rome. If you can, you must go on this trip. It's a great augmentation to a visit in Rome because you get a sense of the Neopolitan and -- of course -- Pompeii.

Solid tour

Good tour, value for money and the guide (Andrea) and transport were fine. It is a long day under any conditions and delivered the Pompeii highlights as promised. Be aware it is limited time at the ruins and given the size you only hit the highlights and insufficient private time to see vast areas of the ruins. Food was good but I have to say both the rest stop and lunch restaurants were 2 of the most clinical non Italian feeling places I have ever been to. Catering options are limited I guess but would have preferred an Autogrill on the freeway and something with more character for lunch

Fascinating, full day, no hassles

Great tour, full of information, and Pompeii is such an interesting site. Meeting the tour is super easy, with no hassles whatsoever. The bus is comfortable, and there are opportunities to stretch, get food/drink, and find a toilet throughout the day. Robert is as much host as guide, and it would be difficult to find someone who is any better. Great value!

Pompei/ Naples Tour a MUST

My husband and I did our tour this week with tour guide, Anna and driver Antonino. Anna was very informative and friendly and Antonino did an amazing job behind the wheel. The drive was a little long but that is out of their control, Pompei is closer to Naples than Rome but it is much better to stay in Rome than Naples. For our tour guide in Pompei, we had Giorgio who was very well versed in the history of Pompei. The tour also included a half hour stop in a store in Naples where you can purchase different items such as candy, soaps and lemoncello. I would 100% recommend this tour.

Marathon visit

The tour was ok , the lunch was delicious, but in general it was rush, the stop at Napoli was a disaster, the bus stopped by the pier, very long and very fast walk to the plaza, not enough time to enjoy and spent 20 minutes to go to the bathrooms and no bus ride around the city. Walking back to the bus was worse, like running a marathon. Not what was advertised.
