Leave the city by comfortable coach, and journey into Iceland’s countryside to search for the Northern Lights.

En route, listen as your guide explains the science behind the extraordinary natural phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis. Learn about the Icelandic myths that have grown up around the spectacle, and how the fluorescent lights are formed by electrically charged particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Leave Reykjavik far behind, and head into an area free from any urban light pollution—the darker the skies, the better the chances of getting a good view of the lights.

Hop out of the coach at select locations with your camera in hand and scan the skies, with pointers from your guide. If you’re lucky, be treated to a display and gaze at the shimmering veils of fluorescent lights as they dance and move across the sky.

If you’re keen to get shots, get tips from your guide on how to set up your camera and take good quality photos. Sightings can’t be guaranteed, but if you don’t observe the lights, you receive a complimentary ticket to take the evening tour on another day.

After your evening spent looking for the lights, return to Reykjavik where your tour finishes with a hotel drop-off.

We can say with certainty that the Aurora Borealis is one of the most unique spectacles that life on Earth has to offer. That is why we make every effort to provide an unforgettable Northern Lights experience to our passengers with daily tours, supervised by our expert guides. After operating Northern Lights hunting tours for many years, we know a thing or two about finding the best possible viewing conditions. Before each tour, we study the weather forecasts to help us decide what the best location that night will be. If the conditions are right, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens, painting dramatic shapes, colors and patterns on the night sky.

Find a different trip to look at the Lights
Charles_D
, Apr 2022
I do not recommend this trip. Two issues that make it a 1-star. 1) Staff made minimal effort to find the Northern Lights when weather was uncooperative. The tour is on a bus, but the bus only went to one site and did not drive to other locations to try to find an area without cloud cover (which contributed to not seeing the Lights). 2) Website mentions guests and try multiple nights to the the lights but turns out this was not true. The tour company did not offer a 2nd chance to see the lights. I asked and was told it was not possible.

Wrong time of the year

Only reason for a 3 and not recommending is because we saw no lights. Nothing to do with the tour company just the wrong time of the year.

Very disappointed..

No lights, long coach trip...in future I would highly recommend the operator not running the event if the weather is forecasted as it was. There was no way we were going go see the lights with the cloud coverage. A refund should be in place for this??

Northern lights at midnight
RoseJoanne_P
, Apr 2022
We got lucky in some sense because other buses (tour companies) were leaving when the northern lights slowly showed up. after 2 min or so...they were ready to see. we stayed longer than 12 midnight which allowed us to see and take photos of the northern lights. You will only see them by your camera. the conductor was informative and did his job good. He called us upon seeing the right clouds to take photos of. Would be nice if they also provided some hot drinks while we wait.

Driver and tour guide were friendly and professional. They picked out the most likely spot to see the Northern lights and, after waiting an hour or so, we were blessed to see their splendor!

Disappointed

I messaged twice the trip organizer asking if the tour was on. They responded very fast staying yes. However, the same day we attended different tour. Many tourists at that tour were going to see the northern lights but their trips were canceled due to the weather and heavy clouds but not ours. We went on the tour didn’t experience the northern lights. I contacted the tour organizers yesterday and asked for a refund or reschedule the trip. They gave me push back but later rescheduled it for us. However last night we waited for a bus for almost 2 hours and nobody picked us up! I sent the messages last night again…. no response. Very disappointed! I wouldn’t not recommend this tour.

Unfortunately, we did not see the Northern Lights the night we went. The forecast was etchy and we just have to try our luck. We appreciate that Gray Line is extending our voucher for the next time.

Great tour company

Although we didn’t see the northern lights due to clouds, the company organising the tour were brilliant, they collected us from our hotel and took us right to a beautiful place in the country to watch for them, we didn’t feel rushed and the bus was warm and comfortable. The tour guide was brilliant and made the journey interesting by telling host stories! So even though we didn’t see them, it was worth it! We were also told we could rebook with the same company for free to try again another night, which lasts up to 2 years! So we will definitely try and return and try again!

Poorly organised, packed like cattle
sabrina_p

Sadly this trip is poorly organised. You are packed into a coach like cattle and taken to a random church/graveyard with disgusting toilet facilities to wait for a few hours in the hope that you’ll see the northern lights. The tour guide was completely clueless about the northern lights, he was reading about them from an iPad with great pauses in between words. The bus driver was very sweet but unfortunately he drove home much slower than expected and although we left the site at the same time as all the other coaches we got left way behind. I would recommend spending a little bit more money and going on a better trip.

Luck needed

We where disappointed by the trip, we spent a long time getting to the golf club site which was poor and had no facility’s. The whole area was over whelmed by light from other site which made the visibility of the light poor. We then traveled to another site which as better and I wish we had gone there first as it was much darker. I fully understand that this is natural phenomenon and what we saw was amazing but spoiled by other light pollution.

Great tour!

Great trip! Went hunting for the Aurora Borealis on a coach with about 50-60 people. Great guide, knowledgeable and fun! Comfortable coach. No toilet but one of the other coaches did. Stopped in one spot and saw the aurora. Stayed for an hour or so then tried another spot but the weather had changed so we didn’t get off the coach again. Definitely need lots of layers and shoes appropriate for walking in the snow! (We went mid March) The coach gets nice and warm.

Easy and convenient bus pickup, drive, and drop off. It’s very economical and simple. But don’t really expect much more. You need the ride to go outdoors and have a chance to see the NorthernLights.

Waiting for few minutes for pick up. But the driver and the guide were very kind. The guide also shared some stories and knowledge about northern light. The whole experience was nice!

We saw the lights!
Chloe_V
, Mar 2022
The tour took is out to a car park near Thingvellir park, it was snowing heavily at the beginning but soon the clouds cleared and we were lucky enough to see a fantastic light show at about 10pm. The bus stayed for a while to let everyone get their pictures. I would advise you wrap up warm to protect from the wind, and pack water/snacks as you may be waiting a while for the lights. Also the commentary from the bus driver was a bit rambly but funny.

A great experience! The guide was nice, not too informative, but enthusiastic. The place was the right one, and the Aurora was stunning!!!
