Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Leave the city by comfortable coach, and journey into Iceland’s countryside to search for the Northern Lights.

En route, listen as your guide explains the science behind the extraordinary natural phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis. Learn about the Icelandic myths that have grown up around the spectacle, and how the fluorescent lights are formed by electrically charged particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Leave Reykjavik far behind, and head into an area free from any urban light pollution—the darker the skies, the better the chances of getting a good view of the lights.

Hop out of the coach at select locations with your camera in hand and scan the skies, with pointers from your guide. If you’re lucky, be treated to a display and gaze at the shimmering veils of fluorescent lights as they dance and move across the sky.

If you’re keen to get shots, get tips from your guide on how to set up your camera and take good quality photos. Sightings can’t be guaranteed, but if you don’t observe the lights, you receive a complimentary ticket to take the evening tour on another day.

After your evening spent looking for the lights, return to Reykjavik where your tour finishes with a hotel drop-off.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Iceland
Before setting off on the Northern Lights tour, our specialists and guides make a decision of where the best possible chances to see the lights are. That means that there is no fixed location visited, and the destination is selected on a day-to-day basis. We can say with certainty that the Aurora Borealis is one of the most unique spectacles that life on Earth has to offer. That is why we make every effort to provide an unforgettable Northern Lights experience to our passengers with daily tours, supervised by our expert guides. After operating Northern Lights hunting tours for many years, we know a thing or two about finding the best possible viewing conditions. Before each tour, we study the weather forecasts to help us decide what the best location that night will be. If the conditions are right, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights swirling in a wild and carefree dance across the heavens, painting dramatic shapes, colors and patterns on the night sky.

We didn’t manage to see the lights this time but the overall experience was great. We had a smooth pick up from up from our hotel, brilliant and informative tour guide.

"Chasing" the Northern Lights

Very good tour package. We went twice! On the first night, we were taken to several spots to look out for the northern lights. It did appear but was not very "showy" as the guide (Mr Erick) termed it. So, we were offered to go again the following night FOC. On the 2nd nite, it was very clear sky but alas, the northern light didn't appear at all. We were lucky then to have able to witness it the 1st nite, even though not very clear.

Our first tour was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions but we were booked onto the next evening’s tour with no trouble at all. The whole excursion was brilliantly planned from beginning to end. Our tour guide was brilliant and full of local knowledge- we learnt a lot about the country and it’s traditions on our way to see the Northern Lights. We were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the lights which was amazing! I would highly recommend this excursion to anyone wanting a guided tour of the Northern Lights.

Northern lights trip is just a waiting game, slim probability of seeing anything. There are so many factors that have to take place in order for you to see it. We waited in one place in the national park for about 3 hours - because we didnt see anything you can go on this trip again free within a year I think. Not much going on while you wait in the cold wind or on the coach which you can return to.

The tour does what it says on the tin: they pick you up, they take you to a field outside the city, they wait two hours not to see the lights and they take you back. Done! There is a cafe with a toilet and a good selection of drinks for you and the passengers of the other 10 coaches to share. We end up seeing the lights the day after by chance and it is just a greyish long shape cloud in the sky, don't be fooled by the photographs! Nevertheless, I am glad we chose this option tour as this is the cheapest option, I would have been gutted if I had spent lots more on a private tour. Still, I can rebook again any time in the next two years!

Let down by a lazy tour company

Ok, firstly I'm not a moaner. I've done all kinds of tours all over the world and can say I've almost never written a bad review. In this case however it's needed. So to put into context, we were collected without a problem at our bus stop where the excellent guide filled us in on stories of how the northern lights occur as we drove to our 'mystery' location. Aapparently as you can never be sure where the lights will appear we had to be ready to race off to one location or another. We were told we first make for a small stop that sells coffee and has toilets and then we will move on to future locations where there would be no man made light to maximise the chances of seeing the northern lights. This is where it all went wrong. We arrived at a bar along a road way..... our large bus and conveniently enough 11 more large Grey Line Tours busses. So to give an image of the situation, there were 500+ people on a grass hill beside a car park of a bar/restaurant. We were looking north to see the lights, which turned out to be over the road way with plenty traffic. Beyond that was a bay and at the far side of the bay was a large town or city all along the horizon. So it's safe to say there wasnt a whole plenty of natural darkness. So when we arrived (around 10.00pm) there was a bit of activity.. no much.... a glow, but this soon passed by 10.30pm. We however stayed at this bar (that is surely owned by or paying Grey Line tours well) until 12.15am. I couldn't believe it. It was a clear night, lovely conditions and we were left at this roadside setting looking at the city in the distance. At 11.45 there was almost night left outside... I went into our bus to find it dark and Alamo full of people waiting to leave. This was just outragouesly lazy. I spoke with a couple in the bar who showed me amazing photos of the lights they has seen at a darker more secluded location earlier that night. Honestly having brought my elderly mother all the way from Ireland to see the northern lights.... this was a disgrace. It was lazy, money grabbing and just downright taking advantage of people. In a half deserted country there were surely a million places to pull up where there is full darkness..... then again there would be noticed priced coffee for sale there. To conclude.... it reminds me of the time I lost my cat when I was 8. My mother sent my brother to help me find it. While I walked the streets, went though the back fields looking for the cat, my bother stood talking to the girl next door outside the house. Grey Line Tours.... you are my brother in this scenario.... could have been so helpful and made such a difference.... instead ye took the short cut, made money on coffee and minimised rather than maximised our chances of seeing the lights....lazy, profiteering..... shame on you. The question is, do we book to go back on it again tonight to see if anything changes?? PS.. giving 2 stars not one because the tour guide was good and the bus wasn't cold.... plus nobody wants to give one star!!

The bus was late, but it is understandable because of all the other pick ups. Our guide gave some information with regards to the Northern Lights and although we never saw one, our guide said as much - there is no guarantee that we will see it. The experience was what we were after for anyways.

We booked this tour for 14th January and unfortunately we didn’t see any lights, however with their excellent policy that allows you to try again for free we tried tried for Thursday 16th which was cancelled due to weather, rebooked again for Friday 17th and we finally seen the northern lights!! The tour guide was superb and very informative, went out of her way to make sure we seen the northern lights and got good photos, she shown us which apps were good to download and how to use the cameras (I forgot her name but she was lovely) the tour bus was nice and warm which was great as it was very cold outside, I think it’s wonderful that you get to try again for free until you see the lights not many offer that service, this was my second time visiting Iceland and I finally got to see the lights thanks to the excellent tour guide and driver that stopped in various places that he could see the lights whilst driving back to Reykjavik, couldn’t recline the enough 10/10!!
