Start your day with pickup from Reykjavik’s bus terminal or your central city hotel (select hotels only). Then, settle inside your shared, air-conditioned coach and venture out of the city toward Iceland’s south. Your day-long tour includes two rest stops where you can purchase foods and drinks (own expense).
Soak in the stark, volcanic landscapes as you travel, and hear information about Iceland’s geography and history from your guide. Pass some of Iceland’s most notable landmarks, such as its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjukur; and stop at two of its most beautiful waterfalls.
Visit picturesque Seljalandsfoss fall, a 197-foot (60-meter) cascade plunging from a rocky cliff. Take in this natural wonder, and if you wish, walk the footpath behind the cascade (depending on conditions) for photos of the rushing water from behind.
Stop, too, at the much-photographed and similarly high Skogafoss waterfall, and pass volcanic Skaftafell National Park and a stunning black-sand desert as you approach Jokulsarlon lagoon.
On arrival, take a stroll by the shore to absorb your extraordinary surroundings. Covering seven square miles (18 square kilometres), this expanse of still, blue waters is dotted with icebergs that have broken from the nearby Vatnajokull Glacier and are estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,500 years old.
The resulting scenery has made the lagoon a popular backdrop for movies, with scenes from blockbusters such as Batman Begins andTomb Raider, as well as two James Bond films having been shot here.
After your walk, take a 30-minute cruise on the lake. Glide close to the immense icebergs to admire them from the sightseeing deck, and learn how they gradually melt into the chilly waters.
Finally, drive back to Reykjavik where your tour ends at the original starting point.
Please note: this is a shared tour with up to 150 guests traveling by coach.
