Depart your central Reykjavik hotel or Reykjavik cruise port by air-conditioned coach and venture into Iceland’s starkly beautiful interior of rugged peaks, pastures and volcanic plains.

Take in panoramic views of the plant that harnesses the area’s natural propensity for generating power, and hear how it produces renewable energy for more than half of Reykjavik's population.

Continue from here along the famous Golden Circle, the sightseeing route that showcases three of Iceland’s most spectacular natural wonders.

Stop by at Thingvellir National Park, a region of untouched beauty steeped in ancient history. Learn how it’s home to the original, outdoor site of Iceland’s first parliamentary assembly, the Althingi, that began in 930, and see the extraordinary Thingvellir rift, where the tectonic plates of America and Eurasia face each other over a narrow valley.

Snap photos as your guide explains how the plates are gradually pulling apart, and then continue to the Gullfoss waterfall. Marvel at the double-tiered falls and, with luck, catch sight of one of the famous rainbows that forms in the mists.

Next, visit the incredible geothermal region of Geysir, known for its hot springs and geysers. Take in the bubbling pools and steam vents, and see Strokkur, a waterspout that shoots to around 98 feet (30 meters) in the air.

Your tour then ends back at the original start point in Reykjavik.
Itinerary

Golden Circle Route
Get into the history of Iceland at Thingvellir National Park, witness the powerful beauty of a multi-tiered waterfall at Gullfoss and walk among bubbling geothermal pools at Geysir Geothermal Area.
Duration: 7 hours

Stop At:
Thingvellir National Park
Learn about some of the thrilling and somewhat gruesome history of Iceland at Thingvellir National Park. It’s significance is so great that it is a designated UNESCO world heritage site. You’ll walk the grounds where Icelandic democracy began and visit sites where Viking-era justice was carried out including the Drowning Pool and the Gallows Rock. Thingvellir is also the place where two tectonic plates are gradually separating creating a gorgeous landscape of steep cliffs and broad fields featuring Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland.
Duration: 1 hour
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Geysir
The Great Geysir, the first of its name, resides in Haukadalur in the Geysir Geothermal Area. The entire area is bubbling with geothermal activity from steam vents to boiling mud pits and the real stars of the geothermal show, the geysers. All other geysers, the world over, are named for Geysir.
Duration: 1 hour
Admission Ticket Free
Stop At:
Strokkur
While the Great Geysir erupts only occasionally these days, the last time being in 2016, nearby geyser Strokkur erupts regularly delighting onlookers by shooting hot water high into the air every few minutes.
Duration: 1 hour
Admission Ticket Free
Stop At:
Gullfoss
The most popular waterfall in Iceland is, without a doubt, Gullfoss (the golden falls). And that is saying quite a lot in a country that is home to thousands of waterfalls. Gullfoss is also considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in Iceland and it is certainly one of the largest. Hearing the roar of the Hvita River as it plunges 32 meters over two tiers into the gorge below is exhilarating. On sunny days, rainbows are abundant in the mist rising from the falls and there are several paths available around the waterfall including one leading down to its bottom so come equipped with your raincoat and have your camera at the ready.

Perfect Day Trip & Iceland Primer

This tour hits all the essential sights on the Golden Circle. It was extremely well-paced, giving you plenty of time at each stop while still maximizing your day. You see so much in just 7 hours! Besides being beautiful, the tour is extremely informative about the geology and culture of Iceland. Our guide Darren gave one of the best tours I've ever had in my life! He was entertaining and full of excellent tips. I took one of his dinner recommendations and had delicious (and affordable!) lobster soup that very night.

Golden Circle on a gray day

Gullfoss waterfall, Thingvellir, and Geysir are stunning. Weather, and having a guide who tried to hard to be a comedian were the only drawbacks. Saw a rainbow on the way back, which put a brighter gleam on a gray day. If you can, I would try to take tours with smaller groups. A better experience. I can strongly suggest geoiceland.com.

Great tour guide, bus not so much…

Very informative tour, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and there was just enough stops for one day. Very good introduction to Iclandinc landscape! One problem was a bus: the seats on Grey line bus were very tight: too close to the row in front and behind. I’m 5.1 and 115 and I could barely fit, my husband is a 6.4’ and large man, he had trouble sitting all these hours on tight seats. My recommendation is to remove few rows of the seats from the bus to make more leg room. I wanted to book another longer tour with the same operator but due to extremely small leg room I rented my own car

Agent booked us for duplicate trip, did not recognize/inform that the small golden circle was a portion of the larger

I have been trying to get refund. I worked with an agent to book three tours and he inadvertently booked the large day and smaller day for golden circle, basically a duplicate trip. we did not notice this until on the bus. we got off bus and have been trying to get money back. the agent should have noticed he was booking us to the same sites. the larger trip was well done, driver/tour guide was great, so was the trip to blue lagoon, the driver was exceptional with dealing with the group, both kept people engaged during the less active landscape. we just want our money back for the error, we used that day for a day trip in the city.
