Overview

This cooking class offers a richer experience of Iceland than most guided tours. Immerse yourself into Icelandic cuisine, tradition, and food culture while, under the supervision of a chef, you prepare a three-course lunch or dinner with fresh, local ingredients. While you are preparing your meal, sample local specialties such as home made Icelandic rye bread, dung smoked Arctic char, and dried Atlantic wolffish, then sit down to enjoy your creation accompanied by a glass of wine.

Incredible. I cannot say enough about the experience and quality of food we had. Our hosts and teachers were very personable and interaction was very pleasant. I appreciate the detail and care they provided in the class. It's as if were were the only one's in the class. I highly recommend. You will leave there refreshed. You'll have happy tummies and taste buds. Plus you get all the recipes to take home with you. What a great evening......

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to cook some delicious Icelandic food by an expert. The chef made the menu easy to follow and she provided detailed instructions for each step as well as the reasons different ingredients were matched together. The experience far exceeded our expectations.

It's been about six weeks and tonight I am taking out the recipes provided by Sigi and Sigríður from my class at Salt Eldhus. It seems the right time to write a review. Salt Eldhus is located on the top floor of a building in the center of Reykjavik. It is a large and airy space, well equipped and appointed for cooking. We found out that most of the clientele was local Icelanders learning about new cuisines, but this class consisted of myself and two American couples learning about Icelandic cuisine. Sigríður is the cooking instructor, while her husband Sigi provides local color, culture, and history. The setup is pretty typical for cooking classes for tourists: you cook a meal together with the other participants under the supervision of the teacher/chef and then enjoy the meal you cooked. The menu selected was a good example of modern Icelandic cooking: an appetizer of artic char on top of a fennel and orange salad; rack of lamb with minted peas and potato; and a dessert made with skyr, the local cheese that is very similar to a yogurt. Sigríður provides a lot of hands on help and instruction. The tasks are divided equally amongst participants, and she is always there to help or even step in as necessary. Sigi provides running commentary including, in our case, a detailed explanation of how lamb was smoked in the old days using sheep dung. The hosts pretty much let the participants enjoy the meal we prepared on our own, but they were attentive throughout. The meal ended up being incredibly tasty, no doubt due to the good instruction and careful intervention of the hosts as it was being prepared. They provided printed recipes of the courses before leaving. As mentioned, I am preparing one of the dishes and I have to say that it is just as good as I remembered. If you like cooking and are looking for a social activity to share while visiting Reykjavik, I highly recommend the class at Sal Eldhus.

Great class, culture, history, food all talked about. Pictures of fish, fresh herbs gathered in the wild,, maps showing where different foods come from. Come.hungary. very wonderful experience.

This cooking class was the highlight of my trip to Iceland, despite not being a natural wonder of the island. There are probably few tours or experiences more intimate than this one, and it is truly a great way to deep-dive into authentic Icelandic culture. First, our hosts were totally communicative and friendly, checking in with us a few days before the experience and then the day of as well. They welcomed us to a wonderful space which functions as a cooking school for both locals and tourist. Salt Eldhus really plays well with the natural blues and other hues of the island, creating an extremely calming and welcoming space with lots natural light and room. Most importantly, the views of the city were top notch. The whole experience played out perfectly. Immediately, we felt at home in Sirri and Siggi’s massive and gorgeous kitchen, exchanging stories over a beautiful layout of food and cooking utensils. We tried a wide variety of Icelandic snacks while cooking, so there was never a hungry moment. The food preparation itself was fun and easy- they allowed us to help out whenever we desired, while still guiding our movements so as not to mess up any of the food. As such, the class felt engaging and educational, while remaining carefree and ultimately fun. I could see the hosts catering to all types of chefs, from budding beginners such as ourselves to the culinary masters on TV. There is an easiness about them that adapts naturally to guests, clearly m rooted in a sense of humility and togetherness. The selection of foods we prepared could best be described as modern takes on traditional Icelandic home cooking. I won’t spoil the menu, but I would be lying if I didn’t say that there wasn’t a single bad thing on the menu. All were exciting to prepare and even more enjoyable to eat. Further, the hosts knew exactly what wines and beers to pair with the food, which made it an even more well rounded culinary experience (and one we admittedly left with a happy buzz!). Simply put, I could tell that the entire selection was thoughtfully curated and perfected, yet in a loving sort of way meant to compliment the flavors of the food. The best ingredient, however, was the intimate portrait of Icelandic life we saw in that class. Our hosts, born and raised in Reykjavík, were actually our first truly Icelandic guides on our trip, and it showed in all the best ways. They introduced us to many beautiful and complex aspects of their Island, and we realized the value of food at the center of it all. There are few places that feel more community driven than Iceland, and food is the Island’s beating heart. For the duration of that one dinner experience, we truly felt like part of an Icelandic family and that is something rare and special. There is no better way to dive into a new culture than food, and likely few better options in Iceland than this one. We left with not only full stomachs, but also full hearts. Don’t hesitate to book this.

Toller Kochkurs! Die Chefs haben den Abend zu einem einmaligen Erlebnis gemacht. Neben tollem Essen gab es auch viele Informationen über Land und Leute. Auch einige landestypische Spezialitäten durften probiert werden.
