Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Your tour starts with hotel pickup in Melbourne for the drive southeast of the city and around Westernport Bay to Kaola Reserve, where you have the chance to see the animals in their native habitat.

Afterward return to your coach, and continue the drive to Phillip Island. In the summer, stop at Cowes Beach en route. Once on the island, explore the coastline. As the sunset nears, head to Summerland Beach, where you first visit the information center to read up on Phillip Island’s beloved penguins that come ashore each evening after a day spent fishing in the sea.

Their adorable waddle along the sand to their burrows is known as the Penguin Parade, and you don’t want to miss it. Head to the appropriate area depending on the option you select when booking to watch this nightly ritual. If you book the standard option, watch from either public boardwalks or viewing stands, where there is no maximum number of spectators (read about upgrade options below).

Your day tour ends with a drive back to Melbourne for hotel drop-off.

Optional Penguin Parade upgrades:

Penguin Plus Viewing Platform: Enjoy the parade from a restricted platform next to the penguin's main route. A drink and small gift are included. This experience is limited to 150 people.

The Penguin Skybox: Watch the parade from an elevated tower, an exclusive vantage point in the main stands that’s limited to only five people. Dry and warm, the Skybox provides some of the best views of the penguin burrows on the beach. You have your own ranger you can talk to about the penguins. This experience includes non-alcoholic drinks.

Ranger Guided Tour: Limited to 15 people, this option takes you, with your own guide, to a secluded location on the beach where you can get closer to the penguins.

Underground Viewing Experience: Limited to a maximum of 70 people, this option provides you with the closest possible viewing of the penguins.

Great Tour

Great tour with Roger. Enjoyed all the stops along the way just as much as the penguin parade itself. I booked the ranger tour which was nice bc you get a good seat right where loads of penguins come out of the ocean. Plus they give you binoculars which helps a lot - they are little penguins! Would recommend to anyone looking for a good day trip.

We purchased the guided tour and saw over 1200 penguins. The bus driver Paul was fantastic also. On the trip out we saw wallaby’s and echidnas in the wild. At the wild animal park we saw Tasmanian Devils fed kangaroos and emus and koalas.

Little penguins

Pickup was easy but at the pier would have been better. We took the tram to town ($16 Aus each) and had to walk about two blocks, return was easier as the bus dropped us off back at the pier gates. Our driver was very personable, well spoken and polite. His driving was very good and while he had a sense of humor he never did the really cheesy, corny comments often used by tour guides. He pointed out numerous facts about life in the region, the history, weather etc and was quick to answer questions asked by those on the bus. Our visit to the wildlife refuge was a good one (other than the weather) and we got to see Koala's, kangaroos (some with Joey's in the pouch), dingos etc. While it would be better to see them in the wild this was an up close encounter that wouldn't be possible otherwise. We did see numerous Walabee's in the wild when we got to Phillip Island. The little penguins were the reason for the tour and we were well pleased. Again the weather was a problem, but once it cleared we got to see a lot of the cute little guys. We did the "ranger tour" and would recommend doing the same as we were able to get down closer and see better and on a night where the weather limited the time it made a big difference. On the return the driver stopped the narrative and allowed the passengers to get some sleep before a midnight return to their hotels or ship, Highly recommend.

A Must see

The penguins are a must see if you are visiting Melbourne! This tour starts at 1 pm and lasts 11 hours, so plan on a late night! The drive out of Melbourne is scenic. Peter was our tour guide and he kept everyone entertained on the 2 hour drive to Phillip island. The first stop at the wildlife sanctuary was just ok! Nobbies area was spectacular. You get to see a lot of penguin burrows and the landscape there with the rugged ocean in the background is simply breathtaking. I would highly recommend you do the ranger guided tour as it is generally a small group and you get to see the penguins up close and personal. I felt bad for the people that did the general tour because they only got to see a handful of penguins cross the beach whereas with the ranger guided tour we got to see hundreds of penguins. There was a penguin chick right under our feet going back and forth looking for it's parents! When you are leaving the beach you will get to see the penguins walking to the burrows. It is really cute to see them walk all over the place! We also got to see goose, wallabies and a snake on this tour!

Enjoyed the day very much. We got the premium seating and it was well worth it. It was windy and if we had not bought a blanket we would have frozen in the chill.

We did the guided ranger tour and glad we did. They supplied us with binoculars and a sound device so they could tell us about the little penguins during their trip. We had special seating on the platform and were able to see more penguins come from the water and also follow them from the elevated walkway. I am not sure general admission people got to see much as it was primarily busy by the platform. Worth the extra money if you are going to spend the time.

The visit to see those sweet little creatures was amazing. Our guide did not engage himself as much with us ( we were only 13) as I thought he might. But it was all about the penguins! The journey there was a lovely drive. Nice to see countryside.

Fascinating to see. Anyone with children should go in this tour. It was too hot to hold the koalas but they were adorable it was fun feeding the kangaroos.
