The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by 19th-century African-American slaves in the United States to escape to freedom with the help of abolitionists and allies who supported their cause. This path from slavery to freedom ran right through Niagara, where tens of thousands of people crossed over into Canada in search of a better life.

This particular journey begins with convenient transport from your Niagara Falls area hotel. Prepare to go back in time to the 19th century, when the Underground Railroad shuttled slaves to freedom across the border.

The knowledgeable tour guides in period clothing emulate the “conductors” of the day — those people who transported the fugitives from station to station. Hear the stories and see the key sites in the area, like the suspension bridge over the Niagara River that led many slaves to a new life of freedom.

Finally, stop at breathtaking Niagara Falls to gain a better understanding of how the mighty falls, too, played a role in the Underground Railroad network.

This was an amazing experience!!! Kevin was an excellent guide and provided a highly historical tour, rich in African American history. It's an experience my 12 year old won't ever forget. Best regards Kevin. Keep enriching the public with your knowledge. Many thanks to you for accomodating us on your off day!

This very personal tour connected us with an expert on the Underground Railroad in the Niagara/Lewiston area and included a powerful stop at a Railroad "station."

Please do yourself a favor whether you're staying on the U.S. side of the falls of the Canadian side, book a tour with Motherland Connextions! I found this company on Viator. I found the Underground Railroad tour in Buffalo and immediately booked. Why did I book? For starts, it's a 3 hour tour learning about one of the most historic and unknown aspects of American history. It is extremely well priced for the convenience and intimacy of the tour. You're picked up at the Underground Railroad Historic Museum (free parking is a bonus) and you're met by Kevin (dressed in period clothing including a dope top hat). He drives you to the key areas of Buffalo that were critical to the Underground Railroad. We had a very diverse tour group and Kevin made us feel comfortable to ask questions and to interact with our group. One of the best parts of the tour was going to an actual "station" on the Underground Railroad. It's a 300 year-old barn organically owned by McClew family who were "conductors" on the Underground Railroad. You get to experience the barn where many people were housed, fed, and clothed on their journey to Canada. After this experience 've become a Motherland C groupie! Kevin (the owner) could be a history professor (watch out, Dr. Gates!) with his knowledge and passion of American history and the history of Western New York (he's a Buffalo native). Kevin even gave great recommendations for shops, food and hotels for the Toronto leg of our trip. They offer a variety of tours so make sure to check out their website to get their schedule.

This was an interesting and informative tour and our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the countless number of black people who risked their lives to escape the horrors of slavery and obtain the promises of freedom by way of the vast Underground Railroad.

Kevin was extremely knowledgeable about the Underground Railroad not just in New York, but all over the U.S. He was amazing to listen to and answered all of our questions. He also gave us some great recommendations for the rest of our vacation, including which sights were worth seeing and some good restaurants near where we were staying.

We were picked up at our hotel as the company had said and greeted by Kevin the owner of the company. My husband and I were the only ones on the tour that day. He was very informative about the area and had done much research on the underground railroad. He drove us north to small towns where the underground the slaves were hidden in a barn. You must go to see the hidden spot that many people never see. He spend over three hours showing us sights, sharing history, and showing us places of interest near Niagara Falls. It was definitely worth the money.

Both Colleen and I enjoyed our day. We did learn a lot and we liked seeing the different buildings and areas. We would recommend a more structured approach to the tour. This could be accomplished with the choosing of a particular person and learning what happened to him or her.

My husband and I really enjoyed this tour. The guide is very professional, exceptionally knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. He provides extensive background information that went well beyond what was expected. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who considers themselves to be a student of history, as you will not be disappointed. Also, if you have school aged children, this is a 'must' for them to better understand this time in our history. If this company had other tours, then I would have signed up for them ALL! Thank you so much for a terrific experience.
