Color Extravaganza

The Orchid Show at the NYBG was breathtakingly beautiful. It opened with a mirrored fountain fashioned in the shape of an orchid surrounded by columns of pink and purple orchids where you discover that these lovely flowers come in every color of the rainbow and are found on every continent of the world except Antarctica. The exhibit then continues through to the cacti and succulent regions of the world and to the tropical rainforest area. Columns of beautifully colored and patterned flowers greet you at every turn. There is even a kaleidoscopic tunnel where you experience the color spectrum which has a pleasantly surreal effect. It took about two hours to leisurely stroll through the exhibit but i'm sure camera enthusiasts could spend much longer there. I would highly recommend a trip to the Bronx for this show.

I had no idea the gardens were this big! We visited specifically because of the Chihuly exhibit but I would recommend the gardens nonetheless. We visited in the 'off-peak' month of September but I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the summer months.

The New York Botanical Garden is a hidden gem. Know however that the train that they refer to on the website is the commuter train that leaves from Grand Central Station, not the subway.

I decided to visit the New York Botanical Gardens for the first time a couple weeks ago to see The Orchid Show (Orchidelirium). I could hardly believe such an oasis existed only 20 minutes from Midtown Manhattan! From Grand Central I hoped on Metro North Railroad to Botanical Garden Station and it was literally across the street. It was a very chilly day in New York but upon entering the Conservatory it felt like I was in a tropical paradise. Not only did it smell amazing but the Orchids were some of the most beautiful blooms I've ever seen!I cannot wait to go back when the entire grounds are awakening to Spring. This is a MUST see away from the hustle and bustle of the city!
