Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Laura Plantation provides a unique opportunity to learn about Louisiana’s Creole past, thanks to detailed surviving records kept by the family who lived here for four generations. The remarkably well-maintained estate is included on the National Register of Historic Places and the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. Make your own way to the plantation, located an easy 1-hour drive from New Orleans along the Great River Road that follows the Mississippi.

Once you arrive, follow a knowledgeable guide on a tour of the plantation’s furnished, 24,000-square-foot (7,315-square-meter) mansion, slave quarters, intricate gardens and sugar fields. Learn about the French-descended Duparc family who founded in the plantation in 1804. Much of what is known about the plantation’s inhabitants is gathered from the memoir of fourth-generation family member Laura Locoul, in addition to records discovered in the French National Archive.

The honest and informative tour takes a close look at the various personalities of the plantation owners, plus the unique influences of the Creole culture that thrived in Louisiana for more than 200 years. After your tour, you can continue exploring independently with a visit to other plantations along the Great River Road.

Even though it can be a difficult subject, the tour was very interesting and provided a new perspective on plantations and slavery. You will tour the main house and see cabins that are original slave quarters. Laura (for whom the plantation is named) wrote a book, which is available for sale at the shop. Crystal was our guide and she was knowledgeable and provided some humour to lighten it up a bit, while also remaining sensitive to the subject. I also recommend going next door for lunch at B&C.

Solid but needs more

It was good information. The info was very heavy on the plantation owner side and not the slaves. I understand that there’s not much information on that side but it felt too little regardless. The tour guide was very pleasant. I would have also liked to walk the whole length of the property to get a better feel of how large.

We visited two plantations while in the area. Laura was by far a much better illustration of the life on the plantation. Our guide was great. Lots of details about the family that resided at Laura along with the slaves.

Cameron did a great job on the tour he was quite knowledgeable in the facts and history of the place. The tour was a little faster moving than expected and my mom had a little trouble keeping up and missed a small part of it. But other than that the staff was great and Cameron did a great job in ensuring we had a great experience

We didn't have a lot of time in this part of Louisiana, so there was really only one plantation we could check out. We were not disappointed by our choice! Our tour guide, Cameron, did an excellent job of filling us in on the history of this site. The stories within stories were all very impressive as Cameron kept up a fascinating running commentary and description in an animated manner. Though it was likely his umpteenth time in leading a tour, he made it sound fresh. Walking beneath the giant oaks and wandering through the various buildings combined with the commentary gives the visitor a wonderful sense of life in its heyday. An afternoon well-spent!
