Departure Time

8:15 AM
Meet you guide at your hotel in New Orleans between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and drive 35 minutes into the countryside to reach Oak Alley Plantation. Step on board a 6 or 9 passenger airboat with graduated stadium-style seating to begin the first part of your tour.

Travel through shallow waters at up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour), while you learn about the surrounding wildlife from a guide with extensive knowledge about the local ecosystem. Zoom through marsh, swamp, and lake waters en route to alligator habitats where you can see these ancient reptiles up close and learn about their lives. Look up periodically to catch sight of the bird species that also call the area home, including bald eagles, pelicans, ospreys, and owls.

At the end of the boat tour, return to shore to tour the 19th-century Oak Alley Plantation, a typical antebellum plantation house. Walk down a classic alley of live oaks hung with Spanish moss on your way to the house, and then meet your docent for a guided tour inside. Afterward, spend a free hour wandering the 25-acre property or eating at the restaurant and café on site (own expense). The tour will conclude when your driver takes you back to your hotel in New Orleans.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Barataria Preserve
Your swamp tour is only 35 minutes from New Orleans, yet a world apart. This New Orleans air-boat tour is a high speed adventure that is part tour, part thrill ride. You will travel at high speeds in the 6 or 9 passenger boat, then slow down and stop for photo opportunities. Along the way, you will get a personal tour by your local Captain. Our air-boats have stadium seating, so that the person in front of you does not obstruct your view, and every seat is great for experiencing the tour and viewing the wildlife. Yes, gators will get close, very close. So close, that you will be able to look into those reptilian eyes. Alligators do hibernate in the colder months, but our experienced captains know where to look for them. On average, during the winter, you'll have better than a 50/50 chance of seeing a "gator". In the warmer months, you will see a gator. Every New Orleans air-boat tour is unique and we never know what will be around the next corner. The area toured is a combination of swamp, marsh and lake. So, you may see anything from a Bald Eagle to a pelican to Osprey to an owl. It really is that diverse. The air-boats are driven by a 454 Chevy Engine that will produce speeds of up to 35 miles an hour. They are propelled by a huge fan that will blow air from the back of the boat in excess of 200 miles an hour. These tours are truly a blast! They ride in inches of water and go where traditional boats cannot go. These boats were designed to take you to inaccessible areas of the swamp, places that you cannot reach by foot or car. It is truly a unique experience.

swamp and plantation tour
Deanna_M
, Oct 2020
The swamp tour portion was awesome! Our guide was very personable and knowledgeable and rising in the airboats was a lot of fun. We loved seeing the alligators, foliage and all the wildlife, pretty much everything you would hope to see in a swamp. The plantation was beautiful and we enjoyed the short tour and the option to explore the grounds on our own. Only negatives were that the hotel we arbitrarily chose to be picked up at (Fench quarter suites)was abandoned looking so we had to stand on the street for approximately thirty minutes for our ride, also it was a much longer drive between the swamp tour and plantation than we expected, about an hour

We are sorry for your experience with the transportation. Since we do door to door pickups, we have to allot 30 minutes in order to get all of our guests. It seems like you were the last stop. We are glad that you had a great experience on tour and we thank you for the positive feedback!

Love the scenery and history of the oak plantation. The small airboat experience was amazing and worth every penny.

All the tour guides were efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. The price of the package is worth every penny. Make sure to get great pictures. Be prepared to pet the alligators. Yay!

It was very good to learn how some people lived a long time ago. It makes you wonder what if I lived back then?

Great place to go

We were picked up at the hotel and the driver had good knowledge of the area, and told us stories of the area. Oak alley was very nice and the tour guides were very good. I just wish we could spend more time there, but we needed to get to the air boat. So, the air boat was fun and the boat driver also had great knowledge of the swamp area and wild life. We saw many alligators, turtles and fish. We had alligators right up next to the boat and the driver would touch his head with his bare hand. I will defiantly do another air boat ride again.

Interesting insight to a part of American history

Our visit to Oak Alley was interesting, the hierarchy of slavery was different to my preconceived ideas. The trees were amazing, the house was very grand from the outside. The only negative was the complex was far away from the air boat ride and the drive was too long.

We appreciate the the 4 star review. Distance from one locaiton to the other is a problem. When we offer the tours, you can choose to go on two different dates as individual tours or what we call the time saver trip, where you get both tours in a combo tour in the same day. The unfortunate part is that Oak Alley is 70 miles from the French Quarter, it is 80 miles from Oak Alley to the swamp tour dock., and only 22 miles from the swamp tour dock to the French Quarter. Destrehan Plantation tour would have been a better choice for the combo tour.

Swamp & Plantation Tour

Would have received 5* rating if it weren't for the combo. Airboat ride was fantastic! Our guide, Lawrence, knew the best places to go for alligator sightings. Took his time at spots we were obviously intrigued with. Small group is definitely the way to go! Plantation was almost boring. Short tour, with only 5 rooms viewed. Most items/buildings were replications. Wish we would have chosen a different plantation to visit with more history.

Lucky us- it had snowed in Louisiana...

Lucky us- it had snowed in Louisiana the day before our trip so our driver had to find a detour to the plantation- and she succeeded! Not enough time at oak alley(due to said detour). Was nice. Loved speeding on the airboat and seeing swamps etc

The double-booking (Plantation Tour and Air Boat Swamp Tour) is the way to go. The Plantation Tour was beautiful, informative and educational. The swamp tour, with talks about the flora and wildlife, as well as an exhillerating ride through the Louisiana swamp was great. What a memorable day this was!
