Coyoacán, National University, and Frida Kahlo Museum

After meeting your guide in downtown Mexico City, your full-day tour kicks off at Coyoacán, which dates back to pre-Hispanic times. Admire 16th-century mansions along cobblestone streets, and learn about one of Mexico City’s oldest neighborhoods from your informative guide. Today, the area has blossomed into a cultural nexus for intellectuals and artists.

Visit the National Autonomous University of Mexico, built-in 1551, and check out the UNESCO-listed Central Campus, a collaboration that came together in 1952 involving more than 60 engineers, architects, and artists, including muralists Diego Rivera and Juan O´Gorman.

Next, head over to Jardín Hidalgo, and enjoy a lunch break here (own expense) in the garden area boasting restaurants, studios, and craft stalls. Next, enter the church of San Juan Bautista with your guide and admire the paintings inside.

A fan of Frida Kahlo? At Coyoacán Casa Azul (Blue House), or the Frida Kahlo Museum, immerse yourself in the tumultuous life and iconic artwork of this beloved artist. It is here where Kahlo lived and loved with her husband, Diego Rivera. Enjoy an hour of free time in the museum.

Xochimilco

Your Mexico City sightseeing adventure continues at Xochimilco, located 17 miles (28 km) south of Mexico City, a waterway network of floating gardens of flowers. An ecological reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this valley was a lake during Aztec times. To get around the scarcity of arable soil back then, the people developed chinampas, islands with floating reed mats with soil.

Spend about an hour drifting peacefully along the canals and admiring the chinampas from your colorful, flat-bottomed boat called a trajinera. Hear festive music from other boats, occupied by families and visitors celebrating weddings, birthdays and other happy occasions.

As your boatman moves the vessel along by pulling a pole through the water, pass other painted vessels transporting passengers and check out boat-vendors selling fresh food. Enjoy an array of dishes and drinks for purchase, including roasted corn, mole, mixiote (barbequed meat), tacos, carnitas, quesadillas, pulque (milk-colored alcoholic beverage) and micheladas (Mexican beer-based cocktail).

Your day tour ends with drop-off back at the central meeting points.

Floating Gardens of Xochimilco
After the Frida Kahlo Museum, continue on to Xochimilco, an agricultural area located 17 miles (28 km) south of Mexico City where many of the city’s flowers are grown. Back in Aztec times, this valley was once a lake. Learn how the local people, as a way around the lack of farmland, developed islands with floating reed mats loaded with soil and used them as gardens called chinampas. Today, these gardens are an ecological reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Board a colorful, flat-bottomed boat called a trajinera with your guide, and for an hour take a slow cruise on the chinampa channels, passing by floating gardens of flowers. As your boatman moves the vessel along by pulling a pole through the water, hear from your guide about the characteristic boats, originally hollowed from logs and once used for transportation throughout Mexico. Pass by other painted vessels transporting passengers and check out the boat vendors selling fresh food. Hungry? Taste a variety of dishes and drinks, such as mole, mixiote (barbequed meat), roasted corn, quesadillas, tacos, carnitas, pulque (milk-colored alcoholic beverage) and micheladas (Mexican beer-based cocktail). (Food and drink purchases are at your own expense.) Hear music like mariachi drifting from other boats, occupied by families and visitors celebrating birthdays, baptisms, weddings, or simply a good time. After your memorable boat ride, enjoy transport back to downtown.

Fabio was a great guide, he explained things well in English and Spanish and was very friendly. We had enough time to spend at each location. The bus had AC and phone chargers. I would recommend bringing cash for the canals so you can buy food drinks and music!

About the places visited: The FK museum is very nice, and is a must see if you are a Frida Kahlo fan. Xochimilco is very interesting and fun. (*****) About the guide: very friendly, knowledgeable , accommodating, with good English. (*****) About the logistics: it should’ve been named: Market, University, Coyoacan OR Frida Kahlo’s museum, and Xochimilco. First, we spent 15 min in the market, next we spent about 30-40 minutes in the University, which was unremarkable, IMO. In Coyoacan we were given 1 hour. So unless you are not running a speed marathon in the FK museum, you don’t have time to explore Coyoacan, which looked very nice from the window of the van. We could’ve used an extra hour in the Coyoacan instead of the university. Xochimilco is close from the museum; the boat ride takes 1 hr. So the math is: it’s 2 hours of touring + the total of 4 hours of driving in traffic + the unmemorable university stop. (***) If I got to do it again, I would not take the tour. I would go early in the AM to Coyoacan by subway, walked around the area, then spent 1 hr in the museum, and then took the subway to Xochimilco and ride the boat.

Dear Amig@ Thank you very much for your comments. Actually, it is a tour where you can know the most iconic sites in the south of the city, always inviting you to go deeper into these sites perhaps on your next visit, so you will have the details of the site and you can delve into the points of greatest interest. All your comments are taken into account and are shared with the team for consideration. Dulce, Amigo Tours

English speakers beware

I booked the tour in English but was outnumbered by Spanish speakers so the guide would talk for 5 minutes in Spanish and then turn to me a say a few words in English. I understand some Spanish so could tell I was missing most of what was said.

The driver and tour guide were great! We enjoyed going to La Casa Azul and the boat ride at Xochimilco was very enjoyable. We would have preferred more time on the boat and much less time allowed for shopping.

DONT DO THIS TOUR
Luis_O

Very misleading. We wanted a tour of the Frida museum. The “departure” destination is extremely misleading, we lost 2 hours of our life waiting on the tour guide, only to be told they guide cannot give us a tour, it’s self led, and to get to the next destination we had to get our own Uber. We could have paid $11 for the museum and ended up spending $60 to waste our time for what we could Have done ourselves anyway

Dear Luis Thank you very much for your comment, your opinion is very important to us. Being a shared tour, we had other clients who had no problem with getting to the meeting point, however, we understand that Mexico City can be complicated, and perhaps it was difficult to find the meeting point. No guide is authorized to provide tours inside the Frida Kahlo Museum (except for the guides of the museum itself) so in our product, we indicate that we provide the entrance tickets to the museum, but not a guided tour inside the museum. The benefit of the ticket is that with us you will not have to wait in line, because everything is programmed for you to live the best experience, with a well-organized itinerary. We are sorry you did not have the experience you were expecting, we hope you can trust us again on future trips. Dulce, Amigo Tours

I don’t think we should have stopped at UNAM. There wasn’t much to see there, and it seemed like we were in transit for an awful long time even without that stop. The first stop was at a tourist gift shop, which was also not a good use of time.
icon Response from Host , Mar 2021
Dear Amig@ We appreciate the time you spent on this comment. The stop we make at UNAM is to admire Juan O'Gorman's mural, his most important creation, among other details of the place. We regret that from your perspective it was not a perfect experience, but we assure you that the entire Amigo Tours team strives to provide all its clients with extraordinary experiences. We hope to see you on your next trip. Dulce, Amigo Tours
