Departure Point

Alfred's On Beale, 197 Beale St, Memphis, TN 38103, USA
This Memphis ghost walking tour begins on Beale Street, one of the most iconic streets in America. Beyond this 2-mile stretch of blues clubs and restaurants, however, lies a darker history of vice, voodoo, phantoms, ghosts and lost souls. Hear the tales of an eerie past while visiting some of Memphis' oldest sites.

Follow the expert storyteller guide through the town to discover Memphis in a completely different way than the regular tours—in search of its haunted places where a lesser-known history is uncovered.

See the Orpheum Theatre, one of the few remaining movie palaces of the 1920s and home of a ghost named Mary, who has haunted performances here since 1921; the John Alexander Austin House, a Victorian-era mansion said to be haunted by two lovers; the Gayoso House apartment building; and the location of Memphis' haunted piano.

Finally, receive a tour of the notorious Ernestine and Hazel's, well known as one of the most haunted buildings in Memphis. Take a look around this former brothel turned bar, which is home to several ghosts—and a haunted jukebox.

the history of Memphis

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review, Tammy. It sounds like you were a little disappointed, but we are always looking for ways to make our tours better. We hope you'll give another chance again soon!

Highlight of our Memphis trip!

I loved all of the stories that were told. The guide was very personal and had just the right dramatics to fit the scene. However, I had expected to actually go into several locations, not just look at them from the outside. I’m hoping this is just due to the pandemic and not a regular occurrence. I did find her microphone hard to hear at some points when she was leading the group because the speaker was facing away from us and there were a lot of sounds already coming from the entertainment district. We’ve visited multiple ghost tours in numerous cities and this was one of our favorites!

Our guide was amazing and knowledgeable.m, she made it super fun with great historical stories and the right amount of spookiness. Not sure if the website said this, but it should be recommended to bring water.

Great way to get Memphis history.

This tour was excellent. While we didn't encounter any spirits we did get an amazing history lesson on key spots in Memphis. The walking was easy with frequent stops along the way. Our guide was very knowledgable on not only the haunted spots but other historic places along the way. The tour took about 2 hours to complete. I brought my 11 year old grandson with me and he enjoyed this tour as well. I would highly recommend this tour.

Not a good one

Jay the tour guide was amazing. The experience not so much. We ended up being shot by random people with paintballs. Myself and another parent was hit. After that we did not feel safe and could not finish the tour. Jay walked us back in shock herself and continued to apologize to all.of us. I am just glad it was paintballs and not a real gun. My child was so upset seeing his mom attacked like that and it ruined the experience for us.

Hello, Amy, please see the response to your friend’s review. I’d just like to reiterate I’m very sorry your experience was ruined by such a random, thoughtless thing; it’s the first time anything like that has ever happened on one of our tours. I’ll make sure you and the other parties with you receive a refund, if there’s anything else I can do please let me know.

This hefty walk through the city was informative and a lot of fun with our charming young History major “Jay.” Not only did she give us the haunted history in select places, but other tidbits of history and trivia about town plus lots of food recommendations. I’m so glad we took this tour because we learned so much about the city from an insider that otherwise we never would have known. Well worth the $20 and please don’t forget to give your guide a tip!!!!

2/29 Memphis tour

Chelsea was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable, friendly and outgoing. Although I wouldn't say this is a "Haunted Tour" (compared to others I've been on), it's a great tour to learn about local history. Fun evening. Easy walk for those who might be concerned about walking too much. We took frequent rest breaks to rest and even had a bathroom break built in. Earnestine's and Hazel's was the BEST! You have to go!
