Got Mugged By Whales

We had a wonderful time. Saw lots of whales! For half an hour we had to stop the boat because two whales kept going under the boat from side to side (called it mugging). They were within 10 feet from us then. Truly a remarkable experience and the guide said very unusual.

My wife and I were on the Discovery Boat and we were lucky enough to see many whales including whales swimming with their calves. Thanks to the crew and the wonderful comments and thorough explanations made by a young vibrant lady who, we think is a marine biologist, we received a great education about whales as well as a great afternoon at sea.

We went out at 9 a.m. on a cloudy, rainy morning, which worked to our advantage. Everyone was instructed to keep a lookout in all directions for water movement on the horizon, spouting, or whale sightings and we did view whales swimming at the surface and then diving, then re-emerging 10 minutes later. We kept to a respectful distance and on the way back, the sun emerged. Good day. We sighted at least 5 whales. Would have liked them to be closer, but what we saw was wonderful. For early December, I think luck was with us as the whales appear in greater numbers in January and onward. Good company. Good day!

This was an excellent tour. The ship captain and the narrator were very good and knowledgeable. The team was very interactive with those on board, both top deck and bottom deck. On February 24, we saw lots of whales, including a baby whale practicing its breaching.
