Travel independently to King John’s Castle and head inside using your admission ticket.

This 13th-century castle stands on King’s Island beside the River Shannon in medieval Limerick, and underwent a multi-million euro revamp in 2013, including the building of a state-of-the-art Visitor Centre.

Once inside, explore the fortress and Visitor Centre at your own pace, enjoying the historical atmosphere, battlements, and interactive exhibitions.

Wander around the ruined banqueting hall, learn about the carpentry, weaponry, masonry and coinage displays from the costumed actor-guides, and explore the replica medieval tent, blacksmiths’ forge, and siege recreations in the courtyard. Plus, ascend the tower to admire the 360-degree views over Limerick and the riverside.

Journey back in time at the Visitor Centre, charting the story of King John, the brother of Richard the Lionheart, and the fortress’ history via interactive touchscreens, 3D models, and interpretive displays. Immerse yourself in the computer generated animations and holographic projections, and watch the children enjoy the fun audio-visual tasks in the Education and Activity Room.

Perhaps cap your visit at the café, relaxing over snacks (own expense) while enjoying the castle and river views.

King John’s Castle is on ‘King’s Island’ in the heart of medieval Limerick City. The stunning new exhibition at King John’s Castle brings to life over 800 years of dramatic local history. This 13th century Castle reopened on Friday June 28th 2013, following a multi million euro investment. Explore the brand new visitor centre with state of the art interpretive activities and exhibitions. Relax afterwards in our café – the perfect place to unwind while enjoying terrifc views onto the castle courtyard and the Shannon river. 21st century touch screen technology, 3D models and discovery drawer are among the exciting techniques that will connect you to tales of siege and warfare. Children will love the dazzling array of computer generated animations and ghostly projections as they travel back through time. The Education and Activity Room is bustling with tasks to stimulate curious minds. In the busy courtyard, you will discover a medieval campaign tent, a blacksmiths forge and scenes from a seventeenth century siege. The sights, scenes and sounds of King John’s Castle and its environs all combine to recreate the atmosphere of the era.

Agreed, this was one of the most interesting of the Castles that we visited while in Ireland. There were interactive exhibits for kids and period-dressed folks to have a go at sword play etc. The history was excellent, the excavations below the castle were very interesting, and the setting on the river breathtaking. One word of caution, as is often the case in Europe, coming from the center of the city, signage is not great!
