Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Become a jungle explorer for the day on this rafting tour through Costa Rica’s rain forest. Your guide will pick you up at your La Fortuna hotel for the scenic drive to the winding Rio Balsa. You’ll receive a short safety training at the launch site and gear up with a paddle, life vest and helmet. If it’s your first time rafting, not to worry — your guide will demonstrate paddling techniques and share basic rafting tips. No need to bring a camera and risk getting it wet, as a photographer will accompany you on the trip, and you’ll have the option to purchase photos at the end of the tour.

Next, set out on the river and begin your 6-mile (10-km) descent through the rapids. Water levels vary depending on rainfall, so the river may be shallow or deep. The first half of the ride is the most challenging. Prepare to get wet as your guide helps you navigate Class III rapids like the Congo Loco and Rock around the Croc (don’t panic, as no crocodiles are actually found here).

Take a break after successfully clearing these rapids with a riverbank pit stop and snack of fresh fruit. Relax in the shade of towering trees or enjoy a refreshing swim in the river. Hop back in your raft for the continued journey down more mellow, Class II rapids. Soak up the passing tropical scenery and keep an eye out for native rain forest residents including monkeys, sloths, butterflies and colorful birds.

At the end of your rafting journey, step back onto solid ground and enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. You can shower and change into dry clothes before the return drive to La Fortuna, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel.

A very memorable day in Costa Rica
Paul_C
, Dec 2020
After several raining days, the water level was high and the rapids were huge. We signed up for class III/IV rafting which was cancelled due to the river condition. We were disappointed initially that we had to settle with something less challenging but was pleasantly surprised after we got started. The tour guide told us that it was more than normal class CC III/IV rafting tuor. It took us 50minutes to complete the normally 90 minutes course. The tour guide and the camera man were amazing. We had a very memorable day. Loved every minute of it.

Fun family adventure

Rolo was a great tour guide - very experienced and made the adventure safe and so much fun! We are a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 teens - and found it to be challenging but not too much. The first part of the rapids were challenging and then the last was more scenery. We stopped for lunch had a great buffet with many local foods like rice and beans and plantains. We also went over to a stop with a small waterfall and the kids were able to swim. All in all a great adventure! Highly recommend

Amazing tour with our guide Albert. He was super fun amd professional. First time rafting for me and it felt super safe. The lunch was a delicious buffet of local Costa Rica food. We loved every second of the trip! We came from Puerto Rico and really enjoyed the trip.

fun and well-organized

We had a blast with this rafting tour! It's very well-organized, from picking us up at the hotel to getting us to the site where we were carefully fitted with our helmets and life vest. We had a few minutes to practice all the rafting maneuvers actually in the river over some gentle rapids before hitting the class III. Our guide, Bryan, was great at steering us over the most fun parts of the rapids and keeping us on track so we wouldn't get stuck. We stopped for a delicious and refreshing snack of fresh cut pineapples and mangos about half way down the tour. After the rafting, they provided towels and plastic bags and had a place with showers and clean changing rooms. The local restaurant for lunch was excellent with fresh authentic local cuisine and plenty of vegetarian options, very clean and located in a picturesque part of the forest. Excellent activity!

The rafting itself was fun - we had an adequate safety tutorial, and it was a nice mix of faster rapids and slow drifting down the river. Occasionally, the guides would point out animals on the side of the river. The lunch afterward was delicious. The main reason I'm rating this a 3/5 is that we arranged to get the photos, which were supposed to be $30 for all photos of our group. If you don't have cash, they will take down your email address and send you a Paypal link to pay by credit card. I received a link asking for $35 for the photos (an increase in price), which I paid, but I never received the photos. I emailed the photographer (Juan) to ask for the photos but never received a response. Strongly recommend the rafting, but also strongly recommend against buying the photos (overpriced and you may never even receive them).

We really enjoyed this tour. ADRIAN was awesome he made our experience even more fun. The whole crew was awesome one of the safety rafters would also spot wild life for us. We saw howler monkeys, sloths and frogs. It was our first time rafting and we had an amazing time. They’re big on safety so everyone needs to definitely do this when they come to La fortuna.

Amazing and thoroughly enjoyable- the whole experience was incredible good instructions, nice guides for each raft, the first part was nice rapids with full drenching guaranteed after a short break for fresh-cut fruit the rest of journey was more slow-paced. Definite must-do experience!
