Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Get an early start to make the most of the fresh tropical morning, and meet your guide at the launch point near the Wailua River, Kauai’s only navigable waterway. Get outfitted with a provided kayak, paddle, and life vest, and store your belongings in a dry bag before setting off on the gentle currents.

Soak up the verdant jungle scenery and views of volcanic peaks in the distance on a 2-mile (3.2-km) paddle upriver towards the north fork. Feel transported back in time as you pass by the traditional huts of Kamokila Village and hear tales of the native Hawaiian people who once lived around and traveled the river more than 1,500 years ago.

Take a break from paddling to explore the rain forest by foot on a moderate hike to the Ulewehi Waterfall, where you’ll be rewarded with views of the majestic falls cascading 120 feet (36 meters) down a mountain cliff. Recharge with a riverside picnic lunch of fresh and healthy island fare including vegetarian options before hopping back in your kayak for the return trip to the starting point.

Beautiful and Challenging day trip. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Our guide, Nate, was knowledgeable and experienced. Being in fairly good shape is a plus, as paddling a kayak significant distance and hiking over muddy-rocky terrain is required, but the visit to Secret Falls (lunch-snack provided) is well worth it!

Thank you for your review of our tour and staff. Yes, guests need to be in good shape to be able to paddle 4 miles round trip and hike 2 miles round trip. Trails can become muddy with rain. Guests are exposed to stepping over roots, rocks and stream crossings. Nathan has been with our company since 2014 and very knowledgeable and experienced waterman. Hope you were able to sit in a hot tub afterwards after your workout ;)

Awesome! The trip almost got derailed by a wild boar! But, our guide waited it out and we were able to continue to the beautiful falls!!

Aloha Blaine, In the 14 years that we have owned the company, that was a first where state parks called to inform our kayak companies that we had to close a tour bc of an injured wild boar on the trail! Our other tour was not as fortunate & got turned around by state park workers. Thank you so much for being patient with us while we worked with the state to ensure all of our guests were safe from the wounded boar. We hope to see you all again! Aloha

Wailua River kayak trip

We had a wonderful day with Nathan as our guide on this kayak trip. The Wailua River was a perfect place to kayak and the hike to the falls was not too strenuous. The trail was muddy, which they tell you about in the beginning of the trip, and thank goodness for the boardwalk on a lot of the trail. The falls were beautiful and full of water. All in all a great day trip for this family of grandparents, parents, and teen grandkids.

Aloha Kathleen, We are so happy to hear that you had a wonderful day with Nathan on your tour. We are thankful that the state installed that long boardwalk (where the old irrigation ditches used to fill up with mud up to our shins/knees)! Glad to hear it was a great family trip for all ages!

Wonderful way to spend the day

Wonderful trip. Beautiful scenery, excellent knowledgeable guide. Please be ready to hike, and have a little experience in a kayak or canoe. Our Trip lasted over 7 hours

Aloha Chris, We are happy to hear that you had a wonderful trip! Tour time can clock anywhere from 5-7 hours start to finish depending on the pace of your group and if guests are running late for check-in time. The majority of our guests have little or have never kayaked before. Our tour guide goes over safety and paddling instructions even before we leave the marina to cross the channel to the Wailua River. Guests need to be in decent shape to kayak 4 miles round trip and hike 2 miles round trip. Aloha

Very fun journey

This is a great trip. Very fun kayaking followed by a cool hike to an awesome waterfall. Our guide Alan was terrific. One note of caution: remove any rings if you go under the waterfall. I lost my wedding ring there :( Overall great trip.

Aloha Joshua, We are glad you had a great trip with our tour guide, Alan. So sorry you lost your wedding ring :( The waterfall water is very cold. (I've heard stories that it happens when people even go in the ocean). Please email me at kauaikayak@gmail.com and lmk what it looks like, I can put the word out to our guides and to the other companies to let them know if someone finds it :)

The kayaking was beautiful, the hike rugged but not overly challenging, the waterfall was breathtaking, and Mariah’s guiding was awesome as well. An all around great adventure for our entire family (including our 6-year-old). Highly recommended!

We had a great time on our kayak adventure. Our guide was awesome! The waterfall and easy hike were beautiful and relaxing. Be sure to shoes that you can hike through a little bit of water, because your shoes will get wet.

Aloha Timothy, Mahalo for highly recommending our company! We are so happy you had a great time on your kayak adventure & with your guide! Yes! proper footwear is a must for our guests! Water shoes, hiking sandals like Tevas or Keens or even sneakers work best! Footwear definitely gets wet getting in & out of the kayak, stream crossing and getting in at the waterfall. All the best!
