Next, your guide will take you to the former site of the Alexandria Lighthouse, once recognized as one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. Learn about its mythical past and get an up close look at the 15th century citadel known as Fort Qaitbey, which was built on the site.

Finally, visit the Alexandria Library. Inspired by the original great library of Alexandria, the modern library was built to hold over eight million books and spans 11 cascading levels.

Itinerary
Stop At:
Alexandria
Are you ready for an awe-inspiring day? Then let's get to it! Alexandria is one of the world's most impressive historical cities, and certainly a must-see in Egypt, so if you're thinking about doing this day tour from Cairo...what are you waiting for?! It'll take us about a three hour drive from Cairo before our day tour of Alexandria will truly begin, and where better to kick it off than the Catacombs of Kom Ash-Suqqafa. One of the world's largest Roman burial sites, the Catacombs are one of Alexandria's most popular attractions. Watch your head as you descend into a network of underground passages, tombs, and antechambers via aspiral staircase over a three-level labyrinth (seriously cool, isn't it?!). Dozens of chambers with sculpted pillars and statues await your curiosity, as well as a large Roman-style banquet room, where relatives of the deceased traditionally hosted memorial meals. Our next stop is the National Museum, home to Greek and Roman era masterpiece ruins discovered under the water on the shores of Alexandria. Super impressive old stuff right here! We will enjoy an Egyptian local lunch , Alexandria is famous for its fresh sea food (vegetarian and other dietaries will be accommodated). After lunch we will head to the former site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Although the lighthouse is no longer standing, atop its ruins lie the Citadel of Qaitbay, a defensive fortress built in the 15th century. Designed as a defence along the Mediterranean coastline, the Citadel offers extensive views, fresh Mediterranean air, and a supreme sense of historical significance. Our final stop in Alexandria day tour will be the Alexandria Library. Nerd time! Inspired by the original great library of Alexandria, the modern library was built to hold over eight million books. Built between 1995 and 2002, it covers 11 cascading levels and although it has not yet reached its capacity, it's an impressive homage to the ancient splendour of Alexandria. Pick your jaws up off the ground and explore! As one of Egypt’s most historically significant cities, Alexandria really is a must-see for history and culture buffs. We have no doubt it will leave you enriched, impressed, and perhaps a little awe-struck. My tour guide Mohammed is a legend. He made my day! This tour is really great and I would highly recommend it. My favorite was the former light house, an incredible sight! The 2 hour ride was easy because we talked the whole way. Would book again with this company and this guide!

This tour was great! Our guide Ahmed was very informative from the minute he picked us up until he dropped us off. Well worth spendng the day. Only suggestion would be visiting the Library of Alexandria before the Alexandria National Museum, I feel like there is much more to see there than the Museum.

Be careful when you book this tour to know what it really is... a 3-hour drive to Alexandria, visiting a couple of sites, and a 3-hour drive back. The catacombs are very interesting to see the melding of Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures as each took over Egypt. Do don't go in the castle. The newly re-built library at Alexandria is interesting. Don't know if I'd waste an entire day of vacation on this tour.

The tour was as advertised but not quite what I was expecting. The catacombs were SO AMAZING. The museum was kind of boring and you couldn't take pictures. The library was impressive but again not what I was expecting - I thought there would be more information or artefacts from the original library. My guide was very accommodating and took us to see the citadel.

Had an amazing day in Alexandra, the guide was very well-informed and made sure I was comfortable with pace at which we were going, opting to spend more or less time as needed. Learned a lot about the city in-between sites we say, the education never stopped!

Thankfully, traffic from Cairo to Alexandria was light due to a holiday. The drive is quite doable for a day trip. My guide, Hend, was extremely thoughtful, knowledgeable and accommodating. Each of the tour stops especially the catacombs and library was worth it.

Fun trip with a great guide. Drive was long but not bad at all. The tombs here were different than we saw anywhere else in Egypt, and the museum, while small, was incredibly informative and well designed. As long as you don't expect the grandeur of Giza pyramids this trip is definitely worth it.

Our tour guide (Hind) was friendly, knowledgeable and accomodating. Some of us had to be back in Cairo for train rides to Luxor and Aswan and she was able to get us to all of the fascinating sites and back in time for our departures. The day before the tour, my ATM card was swallowed by the ATM machine and she even contacted the bank to have them hold the card for me until I returned. 5 stars for Hind.

Interesting connection to the Greek and Roman rule, along with being beautiful along the Mediterranean. The round trip time in transport takes a while, so please be prepare to spend the majority of the day in transit.
