Departure Time

8:00 AM
Begin the tour by getting picked up at your central Dubrovnik hotel and then head out of the city via comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. Enjoy the view of the Adriatic and the Dubrovnik Riviera and the rural Konavle region, as your guide drives the van and gives you background on the history of Montenegro, a diminutive and overlooked Balkan country.

After crossing the border, ride along the coast roads, which curve around bay after bay. Admire the beautiful Bay of Kotor, Europe’s southernmost fjord, and stop in the village of Risan for a photo opportunity and to stretch your legs.

Later, hop out of the van to explore Perast. Stroll the streets and learn about the devastating earthquake that rocked the village in the 1970s, destroying much of the medieval town. Take in some of the Gothic and baroque buildings and then get on a boat to cruise out to a tiny island to check out the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks (at own expense).

After a boat ride back, get back in the van and ride to Kotor. The walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a fun stroll. Pop into the Cathedral of St. Tryphon and take some time to explore on your own.

Travel south and stop at the island of Sveti Stefan, once a medieval fishing village, linked by a short isthmus to the mainland. It is now a luxury hotel.

Finally, head on to Budva, a walled city on the sea, sort of like a mini Dubrovnik. Drink in the views of the sea and take some time to relax on the beach or walk the narrow lanes inside the walls.

After some free time to explore, meet the guide at the prearranged time and start your journey back to Dubrovnik. Enjoy one last delight—a ferry crossing along the Bay of Kotor—and then finish your tour in the late afternoon back at your hotel.

Cross the border to Montenegro and travel along the picture-perfect Montenegro coast, typified by sweeping blonde-sand beaches. great trip

Kotor bay was amazing. Would not have wanted to be driving myself in Montenegro given their drivers and police practices. Our guide Dena was superb, so informative and able to share about Balkans' history and context.

Great way to spend the day

Taking a private tour was much more enjoyable than doing the bigger bus trips. Our guide, Robert, was interesting, charming, and very knowledgeable. The pace was great. We were given enough time to enjoy some time in Kotor, and then in Butva where we also had a fantastic lunch. Recommend that you ask for Robert if you can. He will treat you like royalty.

Our group of 5 had an excellent day with Mateo from Dubrovnik to Montenegro. He was prompt at 7:30 am at our hotel, was extremely personable and informative and had us laughing all day long. The car was comfortable and enabled us to get through the border crossings within 10 minutes. He brought us to locations a little less traveled, gave superb advice on how to spend our free time and gave us great perspective on the history, culture and landscape of Montenegro. We were highly satisified and so happy we chose the private vs bus tour.

We read enjoyed our tour guide. We had a very nice, clean car with a knowledgable driver. He gave us choices as to where we wanted to spend most of our time, gave a lunch recommendation and other recommendations for our free time. It started pouring rain while we were out to lunch and he ran our umbrellas over to us from the car so we could explore the town after lunch. Highly recommended!

Excellent day trip!

My husband and I and two children took this trip and had a wonderful time! Our guide let us have plenty of free time at each stop and divide up the time between cities as we liked. The hike up to the fortress in Kotor was challenging, so I’d recommend wearing good shoes for the slick rocks and leaving yourself a minimum of 1.5 hours if you’re in great shape, yet it was well worth the views!
