Enjoy the breathtaking scenery and fresh mountain air of the Lake Shikotsu area by mountain bike on this small-group tour. This active adventure is a great way to get some fresh air and get your blood pumping as you explore this beautiful outdoor area.

Start your mountain biking trip in the morning from your choice of three pickup locations, including Sapporo train station, select hotels near the station, or from New Chitose Airport. After your pickup, proceed by minivan to the trailhead at Chitose, situated around 1.5 hours outside of Sapporo.

Arrive at the trailhead and grab your mountain biking gear, including helmet and gloves, before listening to a short safety lesson geared to cyclists with moderate experience levels. Then pedal out into the outdoor scenery of the Lake Shikotsu area, starting on a trail along the crystal clear waters of Chitose River.

As you continue your ride, the trail heads along a forested path of white birch trees, proceeding uphill for around 1.5 hours and covering a distance of about 9 miles (15km). Finish this section of the ride on top of a cliff at a hydroelectric plant, offering sublime views of the river below. Then continue pedaling towards Lake Shikotsu, which lies another 3 miles (5km) away.

After another moderate few miles of cycling, you arrive on the shores of Lake Shikotsu, originally formed by volcanic activity and now the second-deepest lake in Japan, reaching depths of 1,180 feet (360m). Cycle along the shore of this clear body of water, enjoying views of the volcanic peaks of Mount Eniwa, Mount Tarumae and Mount Fuppushi in the distance.

Take break to have lunch (at your own expense) at one of the many lakeside restaurants, offering a wide variety of food options such as freshwater salmon (sushi or sashimi), hamburgers of Hokkaido beef, or hearty Japanese favorites like ramen or curry.

After lunch, you can select from several return options depending on your fitness and skill level. A mountain path offers a moderate downhill route with some uphill climbs (slightly more challenging), or journey back on a route that is entirely downhill (easier). Both options cover a distance of approximately 15 miles (25km) and around 2 hours of time. If at any time the pace becomes too strenuous, you can ask your guide to slow things down or take a shortcut.

Finish your ride admiring the wealth of natural scenery along the path, including occasional wildlife sightings of Ezo deer, Hokkaido foxes and raccoon dogs, returning to the Chitose area to conclude your trip. Your adventure ends with a return trip to Sapporo or to New Chitose Airport.

Disappointing and not what is advertised

It just isn’t what it claims to be. It isn’t a lakeside bike tour nor is it truly off road. In the morning section - around 20km, we stopped off at one small beach by the lake. The rest of the journey was through some enjoyable forest trails but nothing out of the ordinary. The cycle to the beach is fine, but then you double back the same route before crossing over to cycling through a forest. Guide didn’t speak about anything we saw, and the sites described on the website - well if we saw them we didn’t notice. Then the afternoon was a 1km ride down to the lakeside where the village is. That was it. The bikes (there were 3 of us) all had issues. The brakes on mine were very weak. It takes about 80 mins to get from Sapporo to the lake, and TBH, if this trip was say ¥7,000 rather than ¥10,000 you’d feel you would have got your money’s worth. In total we cycled for about 2hrs 20min.

Had a great time with tour guide Marion. He is very careful and always make sure your safety comes first. Cycling through the park with some bumpy path was great. The view of Lake Shikotsu was awesome with the surrounding of autumn leaves on the trees.

This was an exceptional tour which I would highly recommend if you are staying in Sapporo and are looking for an experience in Hokkaido nature! In total it's an 18 km mountain bike tour two legs with a lunch and some leisure time in between. It is a moderate tour not too heavy. The tour brings you to Lake Shikotsu and its beautiful nature. Jun-san is a good and professional guide, highly responsive to his group, and I really enjoyed biking with him. Arigatou gozaimasu!

Jun-sen was very professional. He picked me up from the hotel in Sapporo city, and sent me back safely after the ride. On the way back to the hotel, he detoured to a river to watch Salmons swimming upstream only September period. The mountain bike I rode was new only one month young and good. Highly recommended.

Highly Recommended! If you like nature trails, then this is for you! You ride approximately 20 km along a pretty flat paved trail to Lake Shikotsu, once there, you are free to look around, take some pictures, etc. The lake has a special tint to it, very nice. After that, grab some lunch in the nearby town (on your own, average sets around 1000 Yen), then head back on the original trail for a little bit and take some forest roads after that back to the original start point. The guide can vary the degree of terrain on the way back, so just ask. This is a full day trip, and you will get back to Sapporo around 4-5 pm.
