Departure Time

9:00 AM
Leave your Cairo or Giza hotel by minivan and start your 3-hour tour. If you have any particular areas of interest, let your private guide know. Your commentary and itinerary can be tailored to your wishes.

Head into Coptic Cairo, an area also known as Old Cairo. This colorful quarter is the original home of the Coptic Christians, one of the world’s oldest Christian denominations.

Stop to see the Hanging Church, aka St Virgin Mary’s Church. Built in the 7th century, this old church takes its name from its location: sited above a gateway in the old Roman fortress. Admire the courtyard and interiorwith its screens, marble pulpit and icons, and hear about its long history.

Next, after a visit to the Monastery and Church of St George, an early 20th-century church that is the only round church in Egypt, call at Abu Serga, a 5th-century Coptic church. View the 24 interior columns and 12th-century icons on the walls, and learn how the church stands where the holy family is thought to have stayed during their flight into Egypt from Israel’s King Herod.

Then, take a look at the Ben Ezra Synagogue, once a Christian church, before finishing your tour at the Coptic Museum, located in one of Coptic Cairo’s oldest areas. See some of the 16,000 ancient artifacts on display, including precious icons and books that illustrate the history of Egypt’s Coptic community.

Before your tour ends, take the opportunity to visit a papyrus institute to see artisans paint on this natural material, and perhaps purchase some artworks.

Your 3-hour tour then ends with a hotel drop-off.

Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it is one of Cairo's most beautiful churches. Continue to the Monastery and Church of St George This is not an old church, dating from 1909, but there has been a church in Coptic Cairo dedicated to the Martyr since the 10th-century. It is one of the few remaining circular churches in the Middle East. Your next stop is the Abu Serga, one of the places where the Holy Family rested after fleeing Israel from King Herod. This Coptic tour was recommended to us by our friends in Cairo. We couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out. Tarek was so knowledgeable and explained so much to us. We wanted to learn some history of the Coptic Church and its importance to Egypt. We like walking tours and seeing beautiful architecture. We felt very safe being driven in a comfortable clean large van by Arfar. When we went to the walled-in scenic area, including the churches and museums, we walked. For about two peaceful hours, we went in and out of a couple churches and a synagogue. The significance of architectural detail was explained to us, as well as descriptions of current rituals and past events on the sights. There were opportunities to shop, but it was not as hectic as the market we attended on a prior day. One could quietly purchase a souvenir from church gift shops if desired. All our questions were answered patiently, along the way. Tarek walked at a slow pace so that we did not overheat in the Cairo sun. He was intuitive to our interests and slowed down at things we were most interested in. The museum was a treat because you were free to take more pictures there. (A very few times, photos were not an option.) The artifacts and even just the design of the museum is beautiful as well as fascinating. Artifacts included paintings, mosaic, papyrus, wooden items, pottery and more. The museum had restrooms which were clean. We brought our own water bottles (vital!) so we didn’t need to look for refreshment along the tour, and we somehow missed the fact that lunch would be provided. We were very pleasantly surprised that lunch came at the end of the tour, and it was delicious. The restaurant was very nicely decorated, and very clean. We had such a pleasant time, chatting over lunch, and I was so happy that we had this tour recommended to us.

This was a great personalized tour that focused on the major sites within Coptic Cairo with room to customize additional stops based on my preferences. My guide Rhonda was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about not just Coptic Cairo but Egypt in General. She is very well-traveled so was able to provide perspective about Egypt within an international context. I enjoyed my morning with her very much and would recommend the tour to anyone looking for a one-on-one or small-group tour with an easy-going, pleasant and very experienced guide.

It was a nice tour, we were picked up from our hotel at 9 am, we met our tour guide where our tour started, he gave an overview what we're doing that day. It's kind of odd that we have to wait for our tour guide. The tour lasted about 3 1/2 hours only and then were dropped off to our hotel by the driver. It's a lot of extra we have to pay such as if you want to use your camera to take pictures you have to pay 50 Egyptian pounds.

This was a good, short tour. The sights are not very huge or grand, but it gives you a good idea of the area of Coptic Cairo. I wasn't sure about all the facts and stories that our guide was telling us. He did talk a lot, and mostly we wanted to look around.

We had an excellent guide for our half day tour of Coptic Cairo. We saw all of the sites listed and we were given lots of information about each from our guide. This tour shows you this part of the city in a snap shot.
