Wonderful way to experience Bulgaria for a day

This was a highlight of my trip to Bucharest! We started off at the Rock Monastery before heading to our lunch stop in Veliko Tarnovo. After lunch, we briefly walked through the city and then headed to the final stop which was the fortress. It was all very beautiful and I felt like we had a good amount of time in each spot without feeling rushed. Cristi was a great guide who was very knowledgeable about the different places we visited. Overall, this was a great tour and I would highly recommend it if you have extra time on your trip to Bucharest.
What a great trip

It was a beautiful experience. The views were increíble and the chuches, monasteries and villages were impressive . We loved the medieval town of Veliko Tavorna with its picturesque cobblestone streets and shops with the local artisan handcraft products and it’s fortress it resembles the Chins wall)Our tour guide Igor was very knowledgeable, professional and he made our experience truly amazing

Time to spare in Bucharest? Go. No time to spare? You didn't miss out.

I had 6 days in Bucharest and wanted to fill them all. This day trip to Bulgaria was an enjoyable way to explore another country and use up some of that time (no need for 6 days in Bucharest!). The guide came right at 8am as was instructed to me the night prior. There were only 4 tourists on my tour. I arrived back at my hotel right before 8pm.
Money exchange: We needed 24 Bulgarian lev for access to the sites (4 at the monastary, 4 at the monastary, 10 at a church, 10 at the fortress. (church and fortress are only 5 with student discount). I didn't use any other local currency -- restaurants and shops accepted card.
Bathroom breaks: Had access every couple hours or less. No concern.
Time at sites: We didn't really need much time at any of our sites. We were the only group at each of them, being a cold March day, so no crowds or people to fight through. There's not much to see, so I didn't feel like we didn't have enough time.
Shopping/lunch/free time: Had 1 hour and 15 minutes for lunch. It was hard to understand if we were going to have free time after our last stop at the fortress to souvenir shop, so I rushed through lunch to buy some souvenirs. We had time to souvenir shop after the fortress, so I wished it was more clear that we could enjoy lunch for that whole time and didn't have to rush through to have time to shop the town.
Arrival to Bucharest: I was the first one picked up in the morning and the last one dropped off that evening. I wish they could've made the pick up/drop off even, so I didn't have to be in the car the longest of everyone (at least 45 minutes more than the other pick ups).
Tour guide: Our guide was very nice and had good information. He didn't overwhelm us with history (though I would've preferred that), and his English was good.
Overall, I'm glad I went. The sites were interesting, but underwhelming. Honestly, I didn't need more than 10 minutes at the monastery, 5 minutes at a church we stopped at, and 30 minutes at the fortress (only because it's a decent walk uphill to see the church). It was a good way to see a bit of Bulgaria, but I wouldn't recommend this tour if you had limited time. Everyone was more than ready to go home once we saw the last site. If you have extra time to fill and would be spending time in your hotel room otherwise, definitely go. If you're crunched on time, you didn't miss anything.

Kristi was an amazing guide. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about Bulgaria and the places we visited. He helped us out when we didn’t have cash for the Monastery which was above and beyond! The restaurant selected had a great view and amazing food. Lots of flexibility with the shops we went into. Would highly recommend this excursion. Definitely ask for Kristi!!!!

Eugene was our guide. He is such a nice guy and very knowledgeable. He drove all day, he narrated on the way when we passed interesting things, he explained everything about the monasteries that we toured, and the town we visited, and he even took pictures for everyone.
And the tour itself was really nice. Bulgaria, in my opinion, is very different than the parts of Romania that we saw, so it was a really great experience to see two very different countries on our trip. Also, for all you get to visit, I think the price is very reasonable.

Friendly, informative, and helpful tour guide. Beautiful scenery and an overall wonderful experience. A lot of driving time for basically two stops, but I’m my opinion worth it. Be aware that there a lot of steps to climb at both the monastery and at Veliko Tărnovo but the views are outstanding.

Tour guide recommended that this tour should not be done in winter....so we had low expectations.
However we had an awesome day. With great sunny weather. We stopped to change money at the border so dont worry about get Lev before you go.
The rock monestary was a good site, bit death defying stairs but really good.
The fortress was great, very steep hill or stairs. The church at the top is like nothing I've ever seen before amazing !
Great restaurant suggested by our tour guide, delicious food.
Time for shopping and souvenirs in a very nice city.
A long day for a couple of sites but a good glimpse of bulgaria in 1 day.
Tour guide was good, felt safe and comfortable in his mini van.
Would definitely recommend this tour.
Wonderful Experience!

Our tour guide was wonderful! I am sorry to say I don't remember her name. I would recommend tour guides wear name tags or give a name card...travellers are so tired we do forget names sometimes. The tour was delightful. The sites were absolutely beautiful. Restaurant recommendations were fabulous. Take some money to shop! The prices are wonderful!

The guide on our one day trip was exceptional. Nice, easy going and informative. A long day but the van was very comfortable and the guide had lunch with all of us in a restaurant that he picked. It was great and I appreciated not having to look for food on my own. i wish I remember his name because he was really exceptional. I saw things that I would not have if on my own.

We perform checks on reviews
You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site.

Sorting, ranking, and search results
Viator wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That’s why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.
On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You’ll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.
You’ll see some experiences with a “Promoted” badge, which means that the operators of those experiences have agreed to pay Viator more to have their experience highlighted.
If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period.
The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We’re always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.
