Drive for 15 miles (24 kilometers) to Salem, a town affectionately known to many fans as ‘Witch City,’ to explore its historic connection to witchcraft. Though Salem is most recognized as the location of the Witch Trials that rocked the colonies in 1692, you’ll also have time to discover to the town’s other connections to the magic arts and haunted history.

Explore Salem streets like Charter Street and Broad Street, and then check out Salem’s Howard Street Cemeteries. You’ll also visit Gallows Hill, where you can enjoy a live theater show that explores the facts and myths surrounding the town’s witch history. A variety of other witch-themed attractions, including the Witch Trials Memorial, Witch House, Witch Dungeon Museum, Witch History Museum, and Salem Witch Museum, offer plenty of opportunities to continue your witch-themed excursion. If you haven’t yet had your fill of haunted history, head over to Salem’s Wax Museum, where you can view wax re-creations of historic town residents and of key figures from the 1692 witch trials.

For those looking to see a different side of Salem history, a number of non-witch activities are also available. Stop for a photo at the ‘Bewitched’ statue, a tribute to the much-loved 20th-century TV show, head to the McIntire Historic District, explore the Peabody Essex Museum, see a 17th-century fishing village at the Pioneer Village, tour the Pirate Museum, or visit the House of the Seven Gables and its connections to writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. At the end of your trip you’ll receive a drop off back in Boston.

Boston to Salem Private Tour

The transportation was a 5; careful driver; took us to the sites we wanted to see; polite driver. HOWEVER, we originally booked via the Viator site’s description, a private trip to Salem with a GUIDE. The company notified us about two weeks before the tour that it would be transport only apologizing for not providing a guide. I supplied a list of the sites we wanted to visit, and we were taken to them. Company good about communicating that whatever wanted to see was OK. My objection is that we paid for a guided private tour and received private transportation. I believe this adjustment warranted a reduced fare for the tour.

Our tour guide Dereck was the best guide and really listened to what we wanted. Myself, daughter and 11 year old granddaughter loved him. He took us to Salem and knew all the best places. It was pouring but he was always right there to pick us up when we came out of the museums. He knew lots of extra tidbits and places to see. Fantastic guide!! We felt safe!
