Returns to original departure point
After downtown Boston hotel pickup, begin the drive to Newport, Rhode Island. Enjoy a snack and listen to the guide provide a bit of history about Newport, a sailing destination for many that’s known as America's First Resort. Receive a guidebook and discount card to use on this trip.

The first stop is at the Breakers mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer mansions and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. Spend two hours here, part of which can be enjoyed with a self-guided audio tour. Don’t forget the photo-worthy ocean view behind the mansion.

Then take a narrated city tour of some other Newport sites. See the St. Mary’s Church complex. This National Historic Shrine is where President John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953. There’s the Touro Synagogue, a National Historic Site that is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States. It’s also the oldest surviving Jewish synagogue building in North America. Also check out Fort Adams, a former U.S. Army post, and the U.S. Naval War College, the staff college and “Home of Thought” for the United States Navy. The guided city tour ends at the Discover Newport Visitor Center to plan some free time with the help of the aforementioned guidebook.

Finally, take a tour of the Elms, a National Historic Landmark that was the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. He made his fortune in the coal industry and would call upon Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to fashion a house after the mid-18th-century French Chateau d’Asnieres outside Paris. Construction was completed in 1901 at a cost of roughly $1.4 million.

After a long day of sightseeing, relax on the journey back to Boston.

Best in Boston!!!

Picked up on time close to our a commodation, really friendly greeting by Chris with a smile and our tickets and our tour packs. Great commentary on history and myths around Boston. Chris was helpful throughout the day and we felt very well looked after. Outside of this we left our phone with all of our booking info on the bus and lovely Lisa drove back into Boston in her own car to bring it to us. What a fantastic thing to do!! If you want to see Boston book book book with New England Trips. They know what customer service is. Thank you Chris,Lisa and Steve!!!

This goes beyond just the day trip. If you leave an item in our bus (which many actually do) we will always try our best to get it back to you in a timely manner. Once our guest, always our guest! We would like to thank the company, our guide-driver for the excellent organization of the tour-call before tour to agree on the place and tie to pick up, First of all, we have been suggested a comfortable hotel to pick us, because we lived in Quincy and it was real very comfortable place for us. The second, the driver arrived exactly on time, We have been impressed with his knowledge of the Newport , as well as with all places that we passed. According to the program, we should see 2 mansions and tour around the town, but we have seen more, thank guide- he helped us how during free time for lunch to see more mansions during cliff walking that we asked to show. So, we walked around and spent pleasant time with beauty of town., we saw other churches, buildings, ship and boats and made a lot of pictures for good memory.. We thank you a lot for our guide and definitely recommend to apply for this trip and others our friends. Thank you)

Lots of options

You’ll get to see two mansions and have some time to visit your choice of several options after lunch. While we were picked up in Boston the tour didn’t technically begin until out of the city and we’ll on our way. Our guide was knowledgeable just wish more insight was given right off the bat. Good overall though. - Amanda, TX

My wife and I enjoyed going with the New England tours down to Newport, Rhode Island to move among the mansions. We enjoyed the old town in Newport. The restaurant that we ate at was excellent. Our driver was great.

First time with Viator; will definitely book them again. Nice hotel pickup; Tim "the tour guide" was wonderful - very knowledgeable, lots of information and stories, kept on schedule, directed us to the best lobster roll we've ever had on Long Wharf. Well worth the price. If only the traffic going back to Boston were lighter :)

This was an excellent way to get a taste of Newport and see some of the mansionsWould have been nice to get to tour some colonial houses as well. Coming home, we hit a traffic jam so our driver took a detour to prevent us from being stuck in it.

It was OK, but...
Masami F
, Jul 2019
The bus was freezing cold all the way and back. I asked the driver for tempter down, but it was ignored. Also the driver did not bring me to my hotel - Royal Sonesta. When I took Salam tour with other tour company, I had no problem at all. I gave the driver $10 tip, but not this tour.
icon Response from Host , Jul 2019
Hello and thank you for taking the time to review us. Sometimes it can be a tough situation for a driver/guide with the AC. Some areas of the bus may be colder than others due to which way the fan is blowing. Keep in mind that there are 15-20 other people on the bus besides yourself. It is always a good idea on a bus trip to take a light jacket or sweatshirt along just in case. You could always leave it on the bus during the day. About the hotel, you were NEVER told that you would be picked up or dropped off at your hotel. The driver/ guide did exactly what they were supposed to do! What other companies do is their business and certainly not ours. We do not pickup in Cambridge due to time restraints and never have. Though tipping is certainly at your discretion, for you not to tip a driver that drove you safely over 70 miles each way, supplied you with complimentary snacks and water and also gave you a 1 hour narrated tour of Newport, in my opinion is probably not something you want to brag about and post publicly. Kind Regards, Stephen M. Belcastro President New England Trips Inc.
