This Kona volcano tour begins at your hotel in either Kona or Waikoloa, where you board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the journey to Kilauea volcano.

Along the way, stop at the 'coffee belt' in the cool uplands above Kona, and enjoy a cup of Kona coffee on a plantation right where it’s grown. Enjoy a light snack in the cool mountain air, and, if you’d like to pick up some coffee for home or gifts to bring back from Hawaii, buying the coffee straight from the source is a great way to help local farmers.

The tour continues around the south end of the island, where you next stop at Punalu’u Beach Park for a walk down the black-sand beach. This scenic spot on the southeastern shore is known for its Hawaiian green sea turtles, which occasionally haul out and sun on the sands or bask in the shade of a palm.

Upon reaching Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, follow your guide on a short hike through a cavernous, naturally formed lava tube, which is created by the swelling and eventual cooling of an underground river of lava. When you approach the rim of Halema’uma’u Crater, you can see the steam as it rises from the Earth and the hiss of volcanic gas, and as the sunlight slowly fades into night, the crater emits an orange glow from the lava lake deep down inside. Since the temperature toward the volcano’s summit can be a bit chilly at night, enjoy a warm dinner of tasty soup that’s served with bread and then dessert.

Throughout this Kona volcano tour, every traveler has use of an iPad for reading more info about the sights, as well as scouring photos and videos or playing games in the car.

Finally, at the end of the fascinating Big Island adventure, return to your Kona or Waikoloa hotel.

Best tour of the island

Coffee tour was very good. Volcano at night was excellent. Katie, our tour guide, was exceptional and very knowledgeable about the island. She told stories about kings and queens of the island. Excellent history lesson. It was the best.

This was amazing and super informative! Our guide Katie was incredible. She was super knowledgeable and even adjusted parts of the tour to give us the best experience. She knew where to find turtles on the black sand beach regardless of the crowd of people and gave us the best views of the vulcano and craters. Highly recommend this!

We had a great tour day with Katie as our guide. She knows sooo much about the area, and shared it all in a very personable way. The hike to see the volcano was 2 miles round trip, which we weren't expecting, but it was worth it! We saw the volcano spewing lava. And lots of lava glow on the ground. We'd recommend this tour in a heartbeat.

The whole day was incredible. Katie is an excellent, knowledgable tour guide and the day was brilliantly run. The lava viewing was definitely the highlight, but all the stops leading up to it brought wonderful surprises.

Katie, our guide was so great! I took this tour with a 9 and 11 year old and they loved it. She had so much information for us about the region, volcanos, Hawaiian history, stories, good restaurants/beaches, you name it. It was a long day but totally worth it to see all of the sights, and it made it easy because she knew exactly where to go and what we should know about each stop. I would highly recommend.

We climbed on the Kilauea!

The Kilauea is huge and worth seeing it, but because it is quite "flat", the seen is not as impressive like rhe Stromboli in Sicily. It's very cold there, so take warm clothes;

I booked this for me and my 3 kids, in part because I wanted to see the sites but also because I didn't want to do the drive on my own. It was well worth it. Our tour guide Katie was awesome. She gave our group the private tour of the coffee farm, helped us find turtles at Black Sands Beach, and was very knowledgeable about Volcano National Park. She also took good care of us with making sure we had whatever we needed as far as drinks and food. The drive was long and the tour was a solid 12 hours, but we all had a great experience.

Katie was an awesome guide. Knowledgeable and kept us on schedule to see everything. She brought her telescope to see the volcano. The lanterns and spare raincoats were handy. Lunch amd dinner were great. She even got us malasadas and chocolate-covered macadamia nuts!

I highly recommend this tour! I was concerned about spending 11 hours in a van all day but we had a great time. We stopped at some really great places, but by far the best stop was Volcanoes National Park. We waited until dusk and got to see lava flowing in the distance. Our tour guide Katie was super informative, and friendly.

The tour was great!! Katie, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable and was such a wealth of history and culture. Only reason I put 4 instead of 5 stars was that we had like 5 minutes to choke down the sandwich for dinner and had over an hour for lunch.

It was a wonderful tour! The guide was extremely knowledgeable to Hawaii history and culture. She shared her expertise and the brevity of all portions of the day was great. Unfortunately the beach closing affected the agenda and we were not able to go to Black Beach this kids were disappointed and hopes this would be their highlight. The guide was creative and stopped for us to view high waves at a overlook. The kids used courtesy IPAD. The glowing lava was breathtaking! I look forward to tonight Lau, also booked with Viator!

This your was extremely well organized and we packed in a lot during the day! We loved learning so much history and so many cool stories about the island. We enjoyed learning some tips and tricks to restaurants and other cool places to check out. It was a lot of time in the van so we were grateful our kids (6&8) had their own iPads!

Katie was a fantastic guide! I loved how she provided a thorough and adequate explanation of the island during the tour. She also gives amazing recommendations for where I should visit during the rest of my time in Hawaii. I joined the tour alone, but since the group is small, you won't feel left out. I also liked how we had enough time for each site. I didn't feel rushed and I was able to take my own time and look around and enjoy each spot. It isn't that long either, so don't be worried about being bored. We were picked up at the hotels around 10-10:30 am (it was later than the description, so we could see lava at the volcano park around 7-8 pm) and dropped off around 10-11 pm. I did the tour in early July and I think the exact schedule might change, so check on them and don't plan anything else for the day. We went to Kona coffee farm, black sand beach, and volcanoes park (crater walk/lava tube) and also saw stars at night. Make sure to bring WARM CLOTHING (jacket/jumper) for the evening! It's very cold and windy in the evening since you are at high altitudes.
