Explore highlights of Kohala, the Big Island’s northwestern coast, on a full-day adventure. The tour begins with early morning pickup at your Kohala or Waikoloa hotel for the drive up the glorious Kona coastline. Pass through the charming plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, and keep an eye out for large marine life offshore, including spinner dolphins and humpback whales (in the winter).

Take in spectacular views from the old Kohala Mule Station, and then climb aboard a sturdy 6x6 Pinzgauer military ATV for brief, bumpy off-road ride along the cliffs. Your destination is the Kohala Ditch Trail, built in the early 1900s to irrigate the surrounding former sugar plantation. Hike approximately 2 miles (3.2 km), passing blasted-out tunnels, ditches and an old aqueduct while your guide shares the history of the plantation and the construction of its impressive irrigation system. Take a break and recharge with a picnic lunch among the beautiful mountainous scenery.

Throughout the moderately challenging hike, see the seven Kohala waterfalls that dot the lush and diverse landscape. Stop at the last fall for a chance to jump into the refreshing pool and cool off under the cascade. At the end of the hike, relax on the ride back to your hotel, where your 8-hour tour concludes in the afternoon.

Best thing we did while on the big island! If you like beautiful scenery and to learn about the Hawaiian culture, plants, and animals…go on this tour! We had Taj as a guide and he was great. Very knowledgeable. The swim through the waterfall was fun and refreshing. I would do it again!

Hotel Pickup Offered But Not Granted

Our driver was Mateo and our experience was great. I have nothing but positive things to say about him. My tiff is with the description of this tour. The price is $205/person and the description at the time of my booking specifically said “Hotel Pickup Optional”. I was even asked for my hotel information upon booking which was the Sheraton Kona; however, after booking, I was given a central meeting location. I replied to Ashlee stating that we did not have any form of transportation to get there and she replied with the following, “ Unfortunately, for this adventure our meeting location for people staying in Kona is at our Hawaii Forest & Trail Headquarters. We do have taxis, Uber and Lyft on the island for getting around. Please let us know if you have any other questions.” My husband and I were able to rent a car but I would like to point out the following: 1. Ubers are NOT available at 6AM to make the early call time for this tour 2. We made two stops to pick up 3 different parties who guess what…were staying on the Kona side. More specifically, they were staying at Four Seasons and Hilton. These parties paid the same price per person my husband and I had paid and yet still were able to be picked up. So no, it is not fair that my husband and myself had to pay the same fair that included hotel pickup, was denied and had to provide our own form of transportation, while other parties were able to be picked up.

Aloha Deanna, Mahalo for taking time to speak with me today. We were glad to hear you enjoyed your overall experience as well as your guide. And thank you for taking time to express your concerns and how we did not meet your expectations. As discussed, I will be personally be following up with our Guest Experience Specialist and Sales Team on how we can better communicate the public transportation options for our guests when visiting Hawaii Island as well as the tour itinerary. We will also review any current product listings with Viator and make any updates to ensure what is listed matches our current operations. We apologize for any unintended miscommunication and appreciate your understanding. We hope you can join us again on your next visit. Mahalo, Jonathan / Hawaii Forest & Trail

Hiking to the Kohala Falls was probably the highlight of my trip while on the Big Island. We hand picked and ate fresh guava from trees, swam under a beautiful waterfall and had lunch while overlooking a spectacular coast line. Mark our tour guide was outstanding. He is personable, very articulate and well spoken. In addition to his extreme professionalism, you can tell that Mark has a true passion and respect for Hawaii, its history and culture. I took two other excursions with other tour companies, and this was by far the best.

Learned. about the various plants, animals, and waterfalls formation and how they became part of this beautiful island. Our guide, Gary, was patient, passionate, and enthusiastic through the tour. He is a born teacher.
