Hiking Montserrat with Catalan Trails
Sandra
, Mar 2020
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our excursion with Ramon. There was 1 other traveler who also in our group so it was just 3 of us. We met Ramon (Catalan Trails) at our meeting point and left on time. The van was comfortable and clean. Ramon was an excellent guide. He is a native of Barcelona so he gave us lots of information about the area and about Monserrat. The trip started early and that was a good as we were able to get parking and go see the church and see the black Madonna with no lines. It was Sunday morning and a beautiful March day and Ramon led us up the mountain making stops along the way to admire the view which is breathtaking. At the top we stopped and had a snack of cheese and beef stick provided by Ramon. He was a great guide and was patient with us - letting us go at our own pace, allowing us to take pictures, telling us about the plants and trees we saw. This day was a highlight in our trip and I really recommend that you hike up the mountain with Catalan Trails. It will be a memorable day. P.S. we are are over 60 so don’t shy away from hiking rather than being on a bus tour to see Montserrat!

Perfect day if you enjoy variety

If you like to hike at all, this is lovely tour. It has a variety of parts to it. History, architecture, nature, animals (we saw Spanish Ibex), music (boys choir), art (Black Madonna and contemporary sculpture on dispay), exercise AND conversation with cool people from other parts of the world. Because of the small group, it is a nice setting for good conversation. Plus, the chocolate dipped croissant at the shop was a killer breakfast. Perfect day.

A must-do!

This was an exceptional tour! I went with my 14 year-old son. We met the guide at the agreed upon location and drove to Montserrat early. I loved that we were early, because we had beaten most of the crowds when we arrived. Our tour guide was Niko, and he was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable about the area and had an answer for just about every question anyone in our group asked. The boys choir wasn't singing because it was the summer break, but that was fine, because we made up for it with the beauty of the hike. The hike is mostly on a paved, albeit steep, path. The way down is mostly steep stairs- our legs were shaking when we were done. We hiked for about 3 hours. We had two teenage girls in our group who turned around before we got to the top, so if you are not it decent shape, this hike can be a challenge.. Doable, but you might be breathing hard at some points. The monastery was a minor part of this tour. If you want to wait in a loooong line to touch the Black Madonna, this is not the tour for you, as you will miss the hike. Niko gave the option to wait in the line if we wanted to, but our group all decided to do the hike instead. If you want to hike and your partner wants to spend more time at the monastery and have a coffee or whatever, this can be done on this tour. Niko is very accommodating and flexible- but just know that he will accompany the hikers, and then we would meet up back at the monastery after the hike. The hike is a loop- starts at the monastery and ends there. I can't say enough good things about this hike. It was my favorite tour and my favorite day on our 1 week trip. And like I said, Niko was great! Easy-going and authentic. He is also a rock climber and he was able to share interesting details about the sport, and point out the faces of rocks that are popular to the climbers. Don't hesitate, sign up!

Great hiking & fabulous Monastery

Niko, our tour guide, was witty and informative. We learned the story of the Virgin Mary statue, had a great hike, with stops to accommodate all. Plenty of time for scenic pictures and then a listen to the boys choir. Niko really knew the trails and where the best views were.

This tour was the best part of my...

This tour was the best part of my trip to Spain. It's a great way to experience some history and nature just outside of Barcelona. Monsterrat Monastery is unique and stunning, especially in the morning. Ramon, our guide, was social and funny and because he's native to the Barcelona region, he enjoyed sharing about his city's culture and history. He's well traveled and has a wealth of knowledge, making him a fantastic guide and he even speaks multiple languages. Because the tour is much smaller and more personal than the tours that usually head up to Montserrat, he's able to adjust the hike paths based on the abilities of the people on the tour. Me and my friend are moderate hikers with experience, so we wanted the best views and highest points possible, which is exactly what we got. We chose a harder hike, but it was the perfect time of day so the views from the mountain changed at every point in the hours we were up there. Even the easier hiking paths though still a good uphill workout had gorgeous views. Having Ramon as our guide we felt safe and we even had some surprise close up wild animal sightings. Pretty cool. More than worth the time and money. I would do this hike a second time if I went back. Ramon has the best tips, if you've never been to Barcelona. It's because of him we ended up going to a great Catalonian dinner in Barcelona the same night of our hike.
