Explore one of Spain's most important religious sites at Montserrat, a monastery situated high above the city of Barcelona in greater Catalonia. The spot offers sublime views, a variety of religious artifacts, and insight into the history and spiritual traditions of this region of Spain.

Begin your excursion by boarding an air-conditioned coach in central Barcelona, continuing on a ride through the scenic landscapes of Catalonia on your way to Montserrat. Your guide provides details about the region's history as you go, offering details about the mountain of Montserrat and the monastery that lies near its peak.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, climb aboard a cogwheel train for the climb to the peak, enjoying panoramic views along the way. Listen as your guide explains how hundreds of years of erosion have sculpted the striking pink rocks visitors see today. Make sure to also keep your camera handy for great shots of the mountain's unique rock formations with Barcelona and Catalonia in the distance.

Arrive at Santa Maria de Montserrat, the Benedictine abbey that occupies the mountaintop. Learn about the critical role the monastery plays in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Catalonia via an audiovisual presentation. Then check out the Royal Basilica of Montserrat, situated adjacent to the monastery. The Basilica is home to the 12th-century wooden carving of Our Lady of Montserrat, a sacred object also known as La Moreneta (the Dark One).

Spend some free time exploring the grounds at your leisure, stopping at the monastery gift shop for a tasting of three local liquors. Then head back to your air-conditioned coach for the trip back Barcelona, stopping at the original departure point.

Stop At:
Montana de Montserrat
Montserrat is a rocky mountain located 50 km to the southwest of Barcelona. It is considered the most significant and important mountain of Catalonia. The etymology of Montserrat comes from Catalan Mont (mountain) and serrat (serrated). The importance of this mountain is due to the legend of the miraculous appearance of the Madonna and Child in one of the caves. This cave received the name Santa Cova (The Saint Cave). To this day the wood carving of the Madonna and Child are kept in the Church of the monastery and it is possible to visit it. This image of the Madonna is popularly known as La Moreneta (The Black Madonna) for its dark color. You will climb the mountain inside the Rack Railway (Cog-Wheel Train).

It was a beautiful place to see you wonder how they carve out those beautiful statues and how they preserved the beautiful art work

Wonderful church and surroundings to visit. Not to be missed. We wished we had more time so that we could have visited the nearby mountain with the cross.

I would recommend doing this as a small group. Tour guide did not give detailed or accurate information about going up the mountain on the fanicular. Had we gone up we never would have been down in time. When we were sent off on our own we were given little information as to where to go. It’s a great place but spend more time there and take a small group tour.

Tour guide was very hard to understand and many people on tour were confused about directions etc. so much more information could have been provided that would have been so helpful for tour.

Guide doesn't know English!!

Absolutely be careful with these guys! Book your tour with some other company. We booked through viator for Montserrat and they have a tie up with Julia travel company. Guide (Jonathan I think?)was disrespectful as he just walked away when I was asking him a question. His English is sub par so he will struggle to give you a fluent English guided tour. I do not wish to stand in the scorching heat while he figures out translations from Spanish to English which was no fun coz he was clearly struggling. Might sound curt, but hey, I paid for this excursion and it wasn't cheap! Biggest turn off is when you are talking to someone and this person walks away. These are such basic manners and for God's sake, you're a GUIDE, THIS IS YOUR FREAKIN JOB!! TO GUIDE PEOPLE!!

Nice afternoon tour at Montserrat

Check in inside the bus station, downstairs at the Julia travel agency office. Nice afternoon half tour. Back in time for getting out to dinner in the evening. Our guide was informative and helped manage time and seeing the key points of interest. Next time, I would like to spend more time to be able to visit the art museum as well.

Not bad not good

Not a bad half day trip. We went in the afternoon so way less people which was nice. Not a lot to do at the top just kind of walk around and leave. Seeing the black Madonna was cool but had to wait in line and then only see for about 1 minute and you don’t even go into the church it’s a side door that takes you around the church.

Very inflexible cancellation if your connections are delayed. Leave room for travels.

We would have loved to do the trip. However please do not book this trip if you have tight timeline and arriving in Barcelona less than 24 hours before the trip. Our flight from NY was cancelled by the airline and the tour operator decline to refund as it was just short of 24 hour. We ended up losing ~$200 for 4 of us. Would have loved to rebook but the tour operator is very inflexible. I am sure its angood tour. Just keep this in mined about possible flight delays in Europe during the peak season.

Our bilingual tour guide was very nice and thoughtful. She was also very informative and a delight to talk to. Montserrat Monastery was not very busy during our tour, so it was as good as a private tour! Beautiful and spiritual!

Good guides, cog railway super. Lots of time allowed at the church. No sure it is a suitable trip for young children- perhaps an age limit I.e. suitable for over 5 s.

Beautiful but unorganized

The site is breathtaking! It is so with seeing. The tour was totally disorganized. Such that we hardly had any time to see the church. Our guide wasn’t too informed - so the explanations weren’t too good.

Underwhelming and Over Rushed

If you’re in Barcelona, this tour is about 70 minutes away in Montserrat and they take you by bus, the bus departed from the Nord Station on road 80, the direction option on the ticket told me to go to road 86, needless to say I spent unnecessary time roaming around looking for the check-in point. I booked the 3pm tour and it brings you back by 7pm, it appeared the Monastery closed at 6pm. Which meant unfortunately for me, this was the rushed version of the tour. Part of the reason I chose this tour was to experience the Cogwheel train ride; the tour guide informed us that we did not have enough time to do it. This was disappointing to hear, why would Viator market it as a combo tour and you only get half the experience? A rushed experience..the advertisement about tasting liquors made from Monks was underwhelming. It was not FOUR “ tastings” it was more like 4 drops of different liquors. The boys choir was on vacation so my group didn’t experience that either. The tour guide was knowledgeable enough but I would not recommend the 3pm tour; perhaps the morning tour is not as rushed or falsely advertised. Visited July 13 2022

A must-see in Barcelona!

Brilliant trip to Monserrat. Definately go see the Black Madonna in the Monastery. Afternoon visit best as less crowds everywhere. Highly recommend the audio visual in the Museum. You do not have to be necessarily religious as it is a very spiritual place. The Dalai Lama said Monserrat has the same high energy vibration as the holy city of Tibet! Not to be missed!

Seeing the Monastery was nice, but not enough time to do some things at the site. Tickets were provided but no time to see these things.

The montserrat is beautiful, the two girls doing the guide are very good - but you don’t have enough time to visit everything and i found it very expensive for what you get.

Good if pressed for time
Rebecca_S
, Jul 2022
It was a good tour but once I arrived in Barcelona I found it was easy to get a train myself to Montserrat and then you could spend as much time as you want there. I would recommend people do this if they have time as there’s lots of good walks out to viewing points which this tour didn’t give the time to do. However, if ripple are pressed for time, this tour was good

Disappointed since not as advertised!
Lin_H
, Jul 2022
The guide was very knowledgeable. We left late for trip due to morning tour returning late, and then we were rushed through tour in order to return on time. Biggest complaint is that upon arrival we were told there is no cog train operating in afternoons, as advertised in tour description, and one of the primary reasons I selected this tour!

Montserrat yes! Tour, prob not

Beautiful area, happily peaceful, not crowded, potentially a spiritual, def. different vibe than hubbub of Barcelona. 40 min bus tour (meet at bus center, herd on, headsets etc). 10 min train up to Montserrat, bus down to bus station. If you are in a hurry, don’t have the time to research/plan, this works & gets the job done. Beautiful place worth seeing, perhaps much better, less expensive ways to do it.
