This day tour begins at Sahil, a metro station in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, though you can also opt for a pick-up from your hotel. Head south to Gobustan National Park, officially known as the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape. The park is actually a hill and mountain site at the southeast end of Azerbaijan’s Greater Caucasus mountain ridge.

At the park’s petroglyph museum, see ancient human bones and work tools that were used thousands of years ago during the Mesolithic period. At the mountain site, see rock paintings and carvings in an open-air museum.

Also, check out the nearby mud volcanoes. Azerbaijan is well known for active mud volcanoes—approximately 300 at the local shore, sea, and islands.

We will utilize a private car/private bus (depending on the number of people joining the tour) to reach Gobustan National Reserve. The tour will start off from Gobustan Museum where you will see ancient human bones, work tools used in back to thousand years ago during the Mesolithic period. Gobustan geographical region is situated in the west-south of Baku. The meaning of the word «Gobustan» is derived from two words «gobu» – «ravine» and «stan»- «place», i.e. ravine area. The word «gobu» is also of Turkic origin and means «a dried up river valley». After visiting Gobustan museum, you will advance to the mountain in order to see real rock paintings in the open air museum.

Later on, the tour will proceed to the Mud Volcano which is 20 mins away from Gobustan National Museum. Azerbaijan keeps the first place in the world for the number of mud volcanoes. About 300 mud volcanoes are to be found in Azerbaijan – at the shore, in the sea and on islands. During this trip you will get a great chance to see these amazing active volcanoes from very close distance. Important Note: On wet seasons/rainy weather conditions, the Mud Volcanoes can be very muddy and impossible to reach by car. Therefore, in case of rainy weather/bad road conditions the trip to mud volcanoes will be substituted with a visit to Bibiheybat Mosque on the way back to the city center.

Shahin was the most excellent guide for this tour and was super knowledgeable about many topics generally about the country, city, and region. The tour of the mud hills and the park was very good, and his in depth detailed knowledge and explanations in excellent English by the way, made the whole tour. AWESOME! I don't know how long this secret will last actually the beautiful secret of Azerbaijan to be honest! - so while it does, GO FOR IT! A great, off the beaten track tour that is one of a kind. Our driver was great, it felt like a local tour with true local information... something you don't always get these days. We loved the mud volcanoes and the Gobustan National Park was like an added bonus! Great all around tour - highly recommend.

Overall it is an interesting experience at a good price. We first went to Gobustan National Park and then to the mud volcanos. Our guide at Gobustan Park answered all our questions. The only thing that we didn't like is that she seemed to be constantly at a rush as she would speak too fast and some people from the group couldn't follow her pace of changing the rooms in the museum. Another thing is that there were many groups at the same time in each room, which are generally small, making it difficult to listen to her if you couldn't stay next to her due to the noise. The rest of the tour was ok. Our driver didn't speak English very well so sometimes there was some lack of communication. Nevertheless, we should give him some credits for helping a couple in our group who brought their baby girl with them.

Our trip to Gobustan and the Mud Volcanos was one to remember. My husband had food poisoning and refused to skip out on the trip. Our poor guide got more than she bargained for, as he got sick out the window on the way to the mud volcanos. why wouldn't he just skip the tour?????? the tour guide and driver were so kind and accommodating and made sure that my husband was as comfortable as possible - WAY ABOVE THE CALL OF DUTY. once we arrived to the volcanos, my husband was feeling much better and our tour guide enthusiastically showed us around terrain and made the trip enjoyable, educational and one that should not be missed.
