Don't miss an opportunity to visit Tiritiri Matangi island, where numbers of visitors are limited in order to protect the island’s wildlife. Ride a 75-minute ferry from Auckland across the Hauraki Gulf to Tiritiri Matangi, a predator-free open sanctuary that’s home to many endangered native birds found in New Zealand.

You’ll have about five hours total on the island. First, listen to a ranger discuss environmental recovery efforts since 1984, which have helped re-establish 12 endangered native bird species and 3 reptile species, including the rare tuatara (a prehistoric lizard).

Opt for an in-depth island tour to learn about resident birds and other wildlife. During the 1.5-hour walk, a guide teaches you to identify various birdcalls. Finish the tour at the visitor center where you can browse through informative exhibits while sipping complimentary tea and coffee.

Alternatively, spend your time exploring the island’s walking trails on your own. Perhaps stop by the lighthouse and, in warmer months, head to Hobbs beach for a swim before the ferry ride back to Auckland.

Tiritiri Matangi Island
When you arrive at the island, you’ll receive an orientation from the ranger. You can then opt to take a 1.5 hour guided walk where you'll learn from your guide about the island's bird life, history and environmental restoration. The guided walk is recommended for an in-depth introduction to the island's birds, other wildlife, and history, or you can choose to spend the whole day exploring the island on your own. The predator-free island is home to many endangered native birds, including the colorful and rare takahe. Other birds that can be found here include the stitchbird, saddleback, bellbird, brown teal, whitehead, kakariki, kokako, New Zealand robin, fernbird and penguins. Once deforested, the island has been recovering since 1984, when hundreds of volunteers started planting 300,000 native trees. Since then, 12 endangered native bird species and 3 reptile species, including the rare tuatara (a prehistoric lizard), have been re-established in the sanctuary. Your guide will give you tips about the best spots to see specific animals and how to identify the birdcalls that you will hear.

If you want to experience a NZ bird paradise, this is it!

Really enjoyed our day trip[to Tiritiri Matangi. The beautiful weather helped. Ferry ride was smooth. Tour was really interesting with a very knowledgeable guide. The bird life was astounding, with highlights being seeing swarms of bellbirds feeding, peeping at penguins in a nesting box, having a ruru in a cabbage tree pointed out and the best -a pair of quietly cheeping takahe strolling along muttering to each other. Beautiful dawn chorus like birdsong in the bush- wow!

The perfect day trip for all comers

This trip to one of the Hauraki Gulfs 'treasure islands' has to be one of the regions best kept secrets! I felt I was getting two trips for the price of one. The ferry ride and the island trip itself. The one and a half hour ferry ride to the island was both very comfortable and made so interesting with skipper Bob's commentary. Once at Tiri, we met up with our excellent guide Toni, who gave us a brief history of the island before a group of about 8 of us set off. Toni's knowledge of the history and bird life of Tiri made the walks memorable. There are four walks to choose from and you don't need to be super fit for any of them! We did two walks in the course of the day, saw lots of native bird life and a Tuatara which was a highlight for me. There is a very nice communal area to sit down (with you own packed lunch - Tiri is a wildlife sanctury so all food is bought in), have a complementary cup of tea or coffee. I would recommend going with a guide - great value at $10 to get the most out of this fascinating and beautiful island, but it is not compulsory.

Fantastic Trip, Note to the motion sickness wary (stock up on Dramamine - if the sea looks as though it could get rough) from Auckland to the Island. A Guide is recommended on the island initially as it gives a great introduction to the history of the island and what to look out for in the way of birdlife. It's a short day with the ferry leaving at 3:30 so spend as much time as you can looking around.

Having a guide to inform was really valuable. We had a small group of 5 so we were able to question our guide. Passionate volunteer guide Sahrah made our trip memorable. We saw many species of birds which we could photograph. Thank you.

Most memorable moments were being guided around and being told the names of the birds we saw. Also a complimentary cup of tea at the visitors centre was much appreciated.
