Start your day trip to the windswept western coastline north of Auckland with pickup from your city hotel. After a short drive, you’ll arrive at the Arataki Visitor Centre, considered the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, which contains more than 39,500 acres (16,000 hectares) of rugged coast and rainforest.

From the panoramic decks, enjoy sweeping views of the Tasman Sea extending all the way to the Pacific. View traditional Maori carvings on display while your guide focuses on the natural and cultural heritage of the area.

Continue further west to the coastal rainforest and learn about native flora and fauna unique to New Zealand — 70 percent of which can be found nowhere else in the world. Walk alongside giant tree ferns growing near the stream, then dig your toes in the black sands of one of the region’s notorious beaches, bordered by rocky outcrops. 

Enjoy a picnic lunch, served at a scenic location, before continuing your journey to an old-growth forest of giant kauri trees, some of them 1,000 years old. Listen for native birds as you walk among thee majestic giants, then re-board your vehicle for the return to Auckland.

After pick up from your Auckland city centre hotel we have a short (30min) drive to the Arataki Visitor Centre – gateway to the coastal rainforest. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the rainforest back to the city and across to Auckland’s southern harbour. The visitors centre is also home to some traditional Maori carvings and your guide will talk about them and explain their significance for the area.Your eco-tour includes a guided walk in an area of original rainforest where ancient kauri trees tower over the unique trees and plants that have developed separately from the rest of the world for millions of years. Your experienced guide will explain about the local plants and animals as you stroll through the forest.

Next your guide will take you out to the west coast to enjoy a kiwi-style picnic lunch at a scenic location. Small bus tour with guide Tony, and my 4 fellow travellers was a wonderful day. Tony made the tour personable, easy, fact filled, and the weather helped with a beautiful day. Seeing the rainforest, the waterfall, the birds, the black sand, and the awesome views was truly a memorable day! And the kiwi pie lunch was great!

The places you see were so lovely! Even though it was raining the beaches were gorgeous! The lunch in Piha was top notch and the walk to see the Kauri trees was just lovely! It was topped off by a very lovely tour guide and a good small group in the van as well! I'd recommend this trip to anyone!

Geoff was a great guide, full of information, helpful tips. No question was left unanswered. I do wish we could have seen one of the falls we visited that was only 10 minutes away in the rainforest park we visited since we were already there, but apparently that's on another one of this company's tours.

Full-day small group tour through forest and black sand beaches. Stefan, our guide was very knowledgeable and equal parts naturalist, hiking guide and Rennaisance man. The all-day tour covers alot of ground, so be prepared to walk. Caution to those with bad joints/bad backs, as the terrain is often uneven and there are various uphill segments. Also alot of the roads are narrow and twisty, so be forewarned if you are prone to motion sickness. The views are spectacular, and worth the exertion. Walking onto the black sand beach was like walking on an alien planet. Highly recommend.

This was a wonderful tour. Dawn was our guide. I was a little uncertain about the trip because the weather promised rain during the day, but we still were able to see a lot of nature as the rain came and went. Very easy going tour. We hit the major highlights but never felt like I was on a schedule or someone else's schedule. Learned a great deal about the areas we visited and a lot about New Zealand during short hikes and our van rides. I would recommend to anyone who was interested in getting away from Auckland for a day, but doesn't want to commit to a lot of travel time to do so. So many wonderful pictures. A very calm, fun, beautiful day.

We went to 3 different locations which showed us the main features of the sub tropical rainforest and it was hard to believe that we were so close to urban Auck!and.
