Elding Whale Watching Akureyri , Oddeyrarbót 2, 600 Akureyri, Iceland
This activity will end right where it started.
Book your desired boat departure time, and make your own way to the harbor in downtown Akureyri.

Then, board your spacious ship, Iceland’s only high-speed, specially modified whale watching vessel, and make use of the provided thermal overalls, raincoats, or blankets. The ship accommodates up to 200 passengers and provides unobstructed views of the seas from cinema-style viewing platforms.

As your ship sails, admire the rugged coastline of Eyjafjord, Iceland’s longest fjord. Drink in the surrounding, snow-capped mountains, and chat to the whale watching guides to learn about the humpbacks that visit the area. The summer sun brings a cornucopia of marine food into the fjord, triggering a feeding frenzy from these larger-than-life mammals.

Learn about the lifecycles of the humpbacks as your ship uses its speed to reach far and deep parts of the fjord, leaving no likely viewing area unexplored.

Scan the seas for whales, and with luck, enjoy some sightings of the mammals as they swim and breach in the waters. You’ll find ample indoor and outdoor seating for viewing the sea in comfort, plus a bar and café for refreshments (own expense).

Your cruise ends when you disembark at Akureyri.

Irresponsible tour operation!

We purchased this tour with the expectation of being back to our port in 3 hours. After being on the tour boat for 2 hours, they announced we were going to get b sack to the port “a little late.” At the time they announced this, we had not seen any whales. I’m certain they communicated with their other boats who had reported spotting whales and they wanted to make sure we saw whales, so they delayed returning to the port. We arrived back at the port 1.5 hours late with only one hour to spare to reboard our ship! They didn’t think that if they ran into issues with their boat that most of the passengers would miss their ship! It was totally irresponsible!!!

Great day of whale watching

What a fun day watching the whales! However, it was pretty darn cold and windy. I stayed inside the boat a good portion of our ride. However, when we were notified that the whales were in sight, we all went outside and enjoyed seeing these beautiful animals. Think we saw 3 whales. YAY!

Not many wales to see

Wast of time. Not many wales to see. You should find wales first before offering this boring trip. It was not interesting

Awesome experience!

The Elding Whale Watching office is about 1/8th of a mile from the cruise ship port. Super close. The people were awesome. Showed them my reservations on my phone and we boarded the boat. We saw a Minke whale briefly but then followed a hump back whale for almost an hour. The captain did a great job of positioning the boat for us to get great pictures. Booking through Viator was much less expensive than doing it with the cruise line and the whale watching boat was less crowded.

Our whale watching experience was fantastic! The guide explained a lot about the whales and she explained where they were so everyone on the boat could see them.

Great whale watching experience

This trip was great! We saw 2 whales (a minke whale and a humpback). The humpback sighting lasted for 20 mins with the whale coming very close to the boat multiple times. The wind is fierce on the top deck but they provided us with a full body coverall that was quite warm. The dock is very close to the cruise ship port so convenient to do in conjunction with a cruise.

We were a little disappointed at first as the weather was very misty. However the mist cleared and we were very lucky that the whales decided to show up very close to the boat. Awesome experience.

The guide is knowledgeable. The departure location is convenient. However, we booked the midnight whale watching, the information information is not specific enough to direct us to the boat. We end up waiting in another location (welding syation) and almost missed it.

It was good. We saw a few whales. Was thankful there was inexpensive beer on board. It was a cold day so I stayed downstairs.

Excellent time watching whales

Whales appeared on the starboard and the bow of the boat for excellent pictures. The educational lesson on what you see when they top the water and show their tales is a plus.

It was a beautiful sunny day. The trip was very well organised and the crew very helpful. We saw at least two humpback whales, one sleeping just under the surface and one feeding. It was a wonderful sight and well worth the trip, good value. There was hot drinks available and snacks on board at very reasonable prices. Crew were knowledgeable and gave a running commentary. Definitely recommend.

Birds, birds, and finally a whale
Eddie_G

I’ve never been whale watching before do not sue really how to rate this trip but we did see a couple of whales. The meeting point was within walking distance from the cruise ship. Keep in mind they do not guaranteed to see a whale. Our group was starting to be concerned after getting an expensive description of the birds in Iceland. Finally a whale emerged and but every time it did the captain would turn the boat I guess so all sides could see but it was frustrating to try to get pictures. Overall a good trip but not really that interesting to me.

Seeing a beautiful humpback whale playing for a good 15 minutes. Tail slapping, diving and jumping, a great experience.

Go to Husavik instead
Samantha_A
, Jun 2022
The company was good. But there were no whales. Had to photoshop a humpback into the picture I posted. Not a good viewing. Apparently the whale watching from Husavik is much better in terms of actually seeing whales. The day before they saw a blue whale. The crew on our boat was informative and nice. Would not recommend though.

Thank you for your honest review. The sightings from Akureyri and Húsavík are both great, and we have actually been seeing the same individual whales in both areas during different times. The blue whale you mentioned was actually spotted in our afternoon tour on the 9th of June. There is of course always a possibility of a none sightings tour, after all we are dealing with wildlife. We are happy that you enjoyed our crews company and hope you will join us again in Akureyri or Reykjavík with your complimentary ticket and have better luck that time!

Underwhelmed

Not the most exciting whale watching tour we have been on. Check-in was disorganised, boat had too many passengers to allow for good viewing. PA commentary was inaudible. For the price, not worth it.
