Stone Gate (Kamenita Vrata)
A major tourist stop in Zagreb, the Stone Gate is renowned both for its historical pedigree and divine associations. A covered entryway that was constructed during the medieval era, the Stone Gate earned its sacred reputation in 1731, when a devastating fire swept through the area and destroyed everything except a painting of the Virgin and Child displayed there. A chapel has since been constructed, and the faithful still come to pay their respects to the painting, which is believed to have miraculous properties.
The Stone Gate is a popular stop on various Zagreb sightseeing tours, including walking and biking itineraries. It is also easily visited as part of an independent day out in the Upper Town.
Things to Know Before You Go
Archbishop Franjo Kuharić pronounced the Lady of the Stone Gate the patron saint of Zagreb in 1991.
The painting is protected by an ornate iron gate, which dates to 1778 and was created by craftsman Ivan Korta.
Look for the golden crowns that were added to the painting of the Virgin and Child in 1931, to mark the bicentennial of the fire.
How to Get There
The Stone Gate can be reached via bus 150, as well as by taxi or bike. As the journey from the Lower to the Upper Town can be a steep walk, the Zagreb Funicular offers a gentler alternative if you’re traveling on foot.
When to Get There
The Stone Gate is a popular landmark throughout the year. It is at its busiest each year on May 31, City of Zagreb Day, when worshippers pay tribute to the painting. Expect ceremonial parades as well as other celebratory events.
Other Upper Town Highlights
The oldest part of Zagreb and home to its heaviest concentration of major landmarks, the hilltop Upper Town is a popular sightseeing destination. After visiting the Stone Gate, continue on to medieval Lotrščak Tower, explore St. Mark’s Church (famed for its vibrant roof tiles), and take in soaring Zagreb Cathedral.
