Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park

The Basics

One of the best ways to see Grand Prismatic Spring is on a Yellowstone Lower Loop tour, which might take you to the springs as well as other attractions like Norris Geyser Basin, Excelsior Geyser, and the Fountain Paint Pots in just one day. Once you arrive at Grand Prismatic, take a walk around the wooden boardwalk circling the spring and admire views of the colorful surface. Be warned, though, that the water itself is far too hot to touch. For the best view of the spring, take a short hike up one of the nearby hills (such as Midway Bluff) for a panoramic vantage point.

Lower Loop Van Tour from West Yellowstone: Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful
We had a wonderful experience. Our guide Sara was excellent. She took the time to explain not only the points of interest but the history and the geography behind the entire place. She gave us plenty of time to enjoy the sights and experiences at every stop. At the end she gave us great tips on dining and shopping. The lunch sandwich was excellent!

Andrew was our tour guide and by the end of the day, he was calling us all by our first name. Very impressive and personable.

Aaron did a fantastic job of operating as our tour guide! He had many interesting facts, stories, and insights into Yellowstone Parks. He was very kind and wanted to make sure we all had a great experience. I would definitely do another tour with Aaron as our guide!

Lower Loop Van Tour from West Yellowstone: Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful
This was an awesome tour. I can’t say enough good things about our guide Sara. The pickup was on time and she made sure we saw Old faithful erupt. We were given snacks, binoculars and a sandwich for lunch. The only reason I’m not giving this 5 stars is because of the poor communication with the tour company. When I received my confirmation email from them my hotel pickup info was blank so I wanted to reach out to them to be sure they had it. I tried for a week. No one ever answers their phone and the voice mailbox is always full. You can’t leave them a message. I tried several emails too. I never got a reply. I just waited in the lobby hoping they would show up. When I got in the van I found out half the other people on my tour had the same issue. They tried to call for more info on their pickup location but couldn’t get through. One person even missed the tour. Everything worked out fine for me. They picked me up exactly when and where I should have been picked up. They just need to make sure customers can get in contact with them after they book a tour. It was very stressful until I saw the van pull up which is a shame because the tour itself was amazing and definitely deserves 5 stars.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Secure your belongings to avoid accidentally dropping anything into the spring.

  • For safety purposes, stay on the boardwalk and don’t walk on the edge of the spring.

  • Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

  • Dress for the weather with lots of sun protection.

  • Plenty of photo opportunities make this a top choice for photographers.
