The Basics

Located at the center of Venice, St. Mark’s Square is the perfect hub around which to plan your walking tour of Venice. It is just steps from the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and its famous Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal, and the Riva walk along the waterfront. The piazza is home to a number of palaces and sculptures by the Renaissance sculptor and architect Sansovino, so a private or small-group guided tour is key to fully appreciating its rich Venetian Gothic art and architecture.

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
If you have only few days in Venice you should start with this tour. You will see the MUST SEE sights but also learn of the city history. The tour is long, so come with comfortable shoes and after a good breakfast.

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
Our local guide was great. She lives in Venice and was very knowledgeable. Our tickets got us through the major attractions without waiting in line. Gondola ride was also very nice. Half an hour ride was included in the package and was well worth it.

Venice in a Day Tour with St Mark's, Doge's Palace and Gondolas
This tour a great way to see several of the key sites around Venice. We had two different guides during the day (Natalia and Chiara), both were knowledgeable and professional. My wife and I really liked to the high level of detail given by both guides that were happy to answer any questions. Our time spent at St Marks Basilica and the Doge's Palace were enhanced by having a guide. I would very much recommend to anyone for their first day in Venice on holiday.

Venice in a Day Tour with St Mark's, Doge's Palace and Gondolas
The guide was very knowledgeable and even had our children get involved. Our guide rearranged our tour to accommodate the high water and everything worked perfectly. We were able to see all of the attractions thanks to her.

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
Great walking tour of the Venice essentials! Recommend doing this on your first day to not only get the essentials complete but a good area/cultural overview! Guide was great and very knowledgeable on the history and small details! Lunch is on your own for this tour which was fine by us but we felt the recommendations were lacking. Fortunately we had a phenomenal food tour the previous day so knew what to look for (and, most importantly, what to watch out for).

Venice: Doge's Palace and Piazza San Marco guided tour
This tour was very thorough and complete. Our group was comprised of about 30 persons with headsets. We were able to hear our guide. We skipped the lines into both sites. We did not see the horse sculptures from Constantinople. It was not included. But, they were available for an additional cost after you completed St. Marks. Just don't leave the cathedral with the group. Return your headset to the guide. There is an additional cost to go upstairs to see them. If you only have a short amount of time in Venice, these two historic sites are a must. I doubt young children would enjoy this.

The best way of seeing Venice in a day

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
We had only a full day in Venice and this tour was perfect for us. We were on a small group, our guide Juliano was the best, being a Venice native we got to see It thru the eyes of a local. We not only covered the main landmarks, but also understood how the locals live, were they shop and eat. The gondola ride is a must to round up your visit to Venice. All the measures to avoid COVID where observed, we felt safe and comfortable. Thank you for an unforgettable day!

Venice in a Day Tour with St Mark's, Doge's Palace and Gondolas
The trip was great and the tour guide excellent. I only wish they had said that they were going to put 6 people in one gondola as I would have paid extra to be just my wife and I alone on our 40th wedding anniversary. Weather was perfect

Things to Know Before You Go

  • You can climb to the top of the square’s clock tower, but prebook skip-the-line access to avoid a long wait.

  • Kids love to feed and chase the pigeons that flock to the center of this family-friendly piazza.

  • The main square connects to the smaller piazzetta square, which is flanked by the Doge’s Palace and the St. Mark’s library (Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana), and opens out onto the Grand Canal.

  • St. Mark’s Square is the focal point of Venice’s lavish Carnival celebrations every February.

  • Although often crowded, the flat square is easily accessible for strollers and those with limited mobility.

When to Get There

St. Mark’s Square is an open-air square, so the area is best enjoyed during the milder months of the year. Summer brings the largest crowds to the piazza, but overall, Venice is relatively quiet from November through February.

Flooding at St. Mark’s Square

Venice sits at sea level on the Adriatic, so when tides are especially high during winter, the city is often flooded. St. Mark’s Square is one of the lowest parts of the city center, and when acqua alta, or high water, hits, Venice sets up elevated walkways so locals and visitors can cross the piazza without getting wet.
