The Basics

St. Mark’s Basilica is the most famous monument in Venice and hosts millions of visitors each year, so there are often long lines to enter. To avoid the crowds and wait times, book a skip-the-line tour, or opt for an after-hours tour for private evening access. While the exterior is visited on just about every city sightseeing tour, a guided tour is the best way to experience the cathedral, given the complexity of its art and architecture. A private or small-group evening tour led by an expert tour guide offers a unique and intimate experience, and the basilica is located on St. Mark’s Square, so you can easily combine a basilica tour with a gondola ride and a Doge’s Palace tour.

Beyond expectations
The tour was the perfect length and Martina was a fabulous guide - interesting, personable, and attentive. She provided a combination of broad historical background with tales about individual lives. Her enthusiasm for what she shared with us was contagious. If only all tours were this good!

Venice Walking Tour plus Skip the Lines Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tours
Venice is just opening up so it was interesting taking this tour at a time when there were no crowds. I did the first part of the tour by myself and we were joined by 4 later. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable with good English language skills.

Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica Tour
This tour is strange under covid conditions but great efforts were made to keep people safe with windows open, one way systems etc. The guide was vary clear and covered well what was a big subject. At 90 minutes this was an ideal condensed tour for people who do not have time for the usual longer one and do not want too much detail.

Group or Private Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola
We had only a full day in Venice and this tour was perfect for us. We were on a small group, our guide Juliano was the best, being a Venice native we got to see It thru the eyes of a local. We not only covered the main landmarks, but also understood how the locals live, were they shop and eat. The gondola ride is a must to round up your visit to Venice. All the measures to avoid COVID where observed, we felt safe and comfortable. Thank you for an unforgettable day!

Legendary Venice St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace Group or Private Tour
Excellent, thorough tour with a very, very knowledgeable guide. No problems with the meeting point or tickets. Lots of opportunities to ask questions and loads of interesting information that really added to the whole experience. We got so much more from the visit than if we had gone without a guide or just used our guidebook. V good value for money

Great introduction to Venice for first time visitors.

Best of Venice Tour with St Mark’s Basilica and Grand Canal Boat tour
The tour gave us a great introduction to the city on our first day in Venice and it helped us choose what to visit in the following days. As the St Mark's Basilica cannot be entered due to Corona regulations, our guide Cristina took us to some other very nice spots instead. For us it was just the right amount of explanations, walking, and breaks. I'd recommend the tour to anyone who visits Venice the first time.

St Mark's Basilica After-Hours Group or Private Tour with Optional Doge's Palace
This is expensive but you are buying a truly exclusive experience. To be the only people in the church, with all the lights on, was magical. The guide was excellent and made the experience even better.

Venice Skip the line Doge's Palace & St Mark's Basilica guided Tour
We really enjoyed our skip the line tour. It was very informative to go through with a guide. It was also worth skipping the queue of people waiting in the sun. I would definitely advise taking this tour.

Best of Venice Tour with St Mark’s Basilica and Grand Canal Boat tour
Our tour guides had wonderful Knowledge about the city; they were personable, humorous and had excellent English! We booked the tour on our first day and it really provided us with a secure grasp of the culture, heritage and layout of the city. The canal boat tour was glorious!

When to Get There

The basilica is most crowded at midday, so begin or end your Venice tour with a morning or late-afternoon visit. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while Venice is relatively quiet from November through February (aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays, and during Carnival).

The Pala d’Oro

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is famous for Michelangelo's “Pietà” and Florence’s Duomo is known for Brunelleschi’s dome, but St. Mark’s Basilica’s greatest treasure—the stunning Pala d'Oro—dates back centuries before either of those masterpieces. This glittering gold and enamel altarpiece from AD 976 is considered one of the most important, refined examples of Byzantine enamel in the world.
