Ponte Degli Scalzi, Venice

The Basics

A sail down the Grand Canal is a trip through centuries of Venetian history, as historic palaces dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries rise out of the water along most of the route. Though stretches of the canal are lined with walkways, many of the important landmarks can be seen only from the water, so a small-group Grand Canal boat tour or combination walking-and-canal tour is by far the best way to go. For a historical tour of the canal, opt for a daytime sightseeing tour so you can see the ornate facades of Venice’s famous palaces. For a romantic journey, choose a moonlit gondola ride. And for a truly Venetian experience, opt for a gondola ride with a serenade!

A perfect intro to Venice
This was a fantastic tour! Cristina was very warm and welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable about the local area and the history of Venice. I was so glad to have her as a guide, as she pointed out so many things I would never have noticed by myself, and gave us lots of recommendations for things to explore ourselves after the tour as well. A great introduction to the city. Thank you for a lovely day!

Grand Canal boat tour and Murano glass experience with Hotel pick up
We had a great tour by boat along the grand canal en all the highlights! Gives a great idea of the City and how its built! Followed by a Tour to Murano which was great! VIP welcome and a Workshop just for two! Beautiful!! The Guide (Alex) was very informative and nice ...left us at our favourite restaurant, as was the deal! The tour was private and all we asked for was included! Super!!

We had Stefano for both the St. Mark’s Basilica & Doge’s Palace tours, and he is outstanding! He made us fall in love with Venice even more. Really passionate about what he does and we really appreciate that. Grand Canal Tour was also great.

Semi Private Grand Canal 1-Hour Boat Tour
We not only had a comfortable boat to tour in, we had a very nice guide to introduce us to the Grand Canal. It was interesting and educational and fun, in spite of the light rain that fell during the last part of the tour. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. I can recommend it.

Small Group Venice Grand Canal Panoramic Tour
the guide was knowledgeable and very informative, the trip was worth seeing and getting a feeling for size of the Grand Canal and the islands are and their locations. the boat ride was good and comfortable. The big issue was if you were on the inside you did not get any panoramic views and good photo shots. there were only 3 three seats on the back end and two in front with the driver and guide

Best of Venice Tour with St Mark’s Basilica and Grand Canal Boat tour
The tour gave us a great introduction to the city on our first day in Venice and it helped us choose what to visit in the following days. As the St Mark's Basilica cannot be entered due to Corona regulations, our guide Cristina took us to some other very nice spots instead. For us it was just the right amount of explanations, walking, and breaks. I'd recommend the tour to anyone who visits Venice the first time.

Private Tour: Venice Grand Canal Evening Boat Tour
Our guide was very knowledgeable and we had so much fun with her. She was able to give all the pertinent information about key sites without going into to much detail. We would recommend this for anyone who would like to see Venice during the sunset. It was beautiful.

Venice Super-Saver: Doge’s Palace, Walking Tour & Grand Canal Boat Tour
We enjoy the morning and afternoon tours very much. Our tour guides are brother & sister (Marco & Marina), they were very knowledgeable and full of history. The boat ride at the end was very relaxing. A good way to end the tour.🤗

Venice Super-Saver: Doge’s Palace, Walking Tour & Grand Canal Boat Tour
Very well organized tour of the three areas. Our tour guide, Christina, was well informed and did an excellent job of informing us of St Mark's and the palace. The grand canal tour was guided by a very well informed individual (can't remember her name) under difficult weather conditions/rain. She did well under the circumstances.

Semi Private Grand Canal 1-Hour Boat Tour
Very interesting tour. In addition to hitting the highlights of the Grand Canal, we also toured some of the smaller canals. We were in a small group of six in one of the "speedboats" - plenty of room in the boat and the guide was very good.

Loved this so much. well worthwhile doing! Go into the little canals that are impossible to reach by walking or on vaporetto.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Most Grand Canal gondola rides begin or end in St. Mark’s Square, home to St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, and include a few picturesque minor canals along the way.

  • Alongside Rome and Florence as one of the most popular destinations in Italy, Venice can get extremely crowded. To avoid a long wait at the motor launch, book your Venice tour tickets in advance.

  • The palaces along the Grand Canal have architectural styles that span from the Byzantine to the Renaissance, and are best appreciated with an expert tour guide who can explain their history and importance.

  • Note that Venice and the Grand Canal feature a great number of bridges, many of which are not wheelchair accessible.

How to Get There

The Grand Canal snakes its way through the center of Venice from the train station to St. Mark’s Square. All of Venice is pedestrian only, so to get from anywhere in the city to the Grand Canal, you must either walk or take a boat.

The Islands of Venice

Venice is made up of over 100 small islands, so for a different perspective of this unique city on the water, take a boat tour to one of the quieter outlying islands such as Murano, famous for its glassblowing industry; Burano, known for its lace-making artisans; or Torcello, thought to be the first populated island the in Venetian lagoon.
