The Basics

Set on the edge of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on the Yucatan Peninsula, Muyil is a worthwhile detour with a number of significant ruins to explore, as well as an observation tower that offers views overlooking the neighboring lagoon. The ancient settlement is estimated to date back to as early as 300 BC. Remaining structures include the Sacbé, a 15-foot-wide (5-meter-wide) ancient road, and the Pink Palace, known for its well-preserved stuccos. Tours from Tulum and Cancun combine stops at Sian Ka'an and Muyil.

Valeria was so knowledgeable and she clearly has a passion for what she does. This is great to get away from crowds for sure.

Private Birdwatching Tour in Sian Ka'an Muyil
My guide Miguel Amar Uribe, he was very knowledgable not just about the wildlife but also the area as well as the Mayan history. Miguel is very personable, easy to speak with and has a great deal of knowledge. Anyone that is lucky enough to use him as a guide will not regret it. Gracias Miguel, hasta la próxima

Sian Kaan Lagoons Through Muyil Ruins & Cenote Escondido
Jose was amazing and very knowledgeable! The lazy River was very relaxing. Sad we didn’t see any marine animals but still a great tour. Overall a little expensive given what we did.

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour from Tulum
Iber was our tour guide and he was amazing! The tour is a nice mix of activities so the day went by so quickly. If you only have a few days in Tulum this is a great activity to book since you get to see some of the ruins, get out on a boat on the lagoon and swim in the lazy river in the middle of the mangroves in the jungle all in one trip.

Private Sian Kaan Muyil Lazy River Tour
We had a great private tour with Salvador! He is very knowledgeable, friendly and laid back. We booked rather late but it was no problem! Easy communication with no issues. Salvador took lots of pictures (which was shared with us online) and we had some very tasty mini bananas and mangos that was provided during our excursion. The Muyil ruins were very interesting and the river float was amazing! There were almost no people around either which made it even nicer. Would definitely recommend this tour and company. Thanks Salvador!

Sian Ka'an and Muyil Archaeological Site Tour from Tulum
Let’s me just start off by saying we booked several tours while on our 2 week Mexico vacation and originally booked a different Sian Ka’an tour and I canceled it and I’m glad I did because this was the BEST tour (hands down) we took. Carlos was the most informative tour guide I have ever met and he is also pretty funny. I wasn’t sure what to expect being that we were a family of 5 with 3 kids but Carlos was great and picked us up from our hotel took us on a mini tour of downtown Tulum first. Then we toured Muyil Ruins and it was absolutely beautiful and he was so knowledgeable down to every detail the plants animals not just the ruins. He was so great explaining how everything was connected. There was homemade granola bars and bananas for snacks and once we got through the biosphere to load onto the boats we had to split up because of Covid rules and my daughter was scared and Carlos had to ride with her and did everything possible to calm her down till the ride was over she said. The float down Sian Ka’an was breathtaking and relaxing at the same time If you could believe it and again Carlos never stopped with the knowledge of the area he’s absolutely wonderful. When we got back to the biosphere a wonderful local Mayan family had cooked us homemade Tinga with refried beans on toasted tortillas with cold Jamaica tea to drink and brownies for dessert. It was one of the best meals I have ever had. No lie! (We even tried to find a recipe online and make it at home because we’ve been craving it and we only got home two weeks ago.) We ate it on a park bench looking at the fresh water lake and some beautiful migrate birds that turned pink cause of the water. It couldn’t have been more perfect. If you are considering this your do it! Ask for CARLOS! We even saw him out when visited tulum later that week and he invited us to sit with him and have a drink! Thank you for the best time! The Stoltz’s We love you Carlos!

Private Sian Kaan Muyil Lazy River Tour
Salvador was an amazing guide, super sweet with our little daughter and has an amazing knowledge about history and nature. I would say that this is a must do tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A raised boardwalk trail (accessible for a small fee) leads to Sian Ka'an and to the observation tower that overlooks the lagoon.

  • Bathrooms are available at the entrance to the site.

  • It’s a steep ascent up the observation tower.

  • Be sure to bring insect repellent, especially during rainy season.

How to Get There

Muyil is located by the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, around 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Tulum. If you’re driving, take Highway 307; a sign marks the entrance. You can also grab a bus (or colectivo) from Tulum to Felipe Carrillo, a town located on the edge of the reserve. Wait time for a bus is typically 15 minutes.

When to Get There

The best time to experience the Muyil ruins is during the region’s dry season (from December to April), when there are fewer mosquitos and less humidity. But this is also when you’ll run into the biggest crowds; January to March is the busiest time for tourism. If you’re traveling on your own, try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the bus tours.

The Chacchoben Ruins

Located about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Tulum and a 1.5-hour drive from Muyil, the Chacchoben ruins are the largest and most visited Maya archaeological site in Costa Maya. The mostly unexcavated site is a popular day-trip option from Cancun and surrounding cities, as well as for cruise ship passengers from the Costa Maya port.
