Lake Ashi (Ashi-no-ko)

Hakone National Park, Tokyo, Japan, 250-0521

The Basics

Lake Ashi sits in the volcanic crater of Mount Hakone’s volcanic crater. Aside from the natural beauty and holy Hakone shrine, the lake and surrounding area are known for its many hot springs (onsen). Japanese inns with spa bathhouses (ryokan) can be found in the area surrounding the lake, and many visitors take the opportunity to try traditional Japanese spa rituals here.

A popular tourist destination that's often part of day trips from Tokyo, Lake Ashi is also home to the Narukawa Museum of Art, plus restaurants and historic sites, such as the 400-year-young Old Tokaido Road lined with Japanese cedars, and the well-preserved Hakone Shrine. Traveling to Mount Fuji 5th Station on the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway cable car is one of the top activities to try in the area.

Great day trip!

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
We spent a great day with Takashi (guide) and Toshi (driver) in the 5 lakes region. They planned the whole day according to our preferences. We got spectacular views of Mt. Fuji from the different sites. Traffic was very bad coming back due to culture day weekend, but they kept their positive attitude throughout.

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
our guide Teddy (Tetsuya Ishida) was wonderful and so was the driver. They picked us up at our hotel in a comfortable minivan. They took us as close to Mt. Fuji as possible and the weather was gorgeous so we were able to see Mt. Fuij and take great pictures. The place he took us for lunch (special Hoto Noodle Soup) was in a high elevation with great views of mt. Fuji, and the noodle soup was delicious. We would highly recommend him and his driver.

We enjoyed our tour the Mt. Fuji Five Lakes Region a great deal! Our guide Taija was very personable and a highly knowledgeable guide, both about the region as well as Japan's broader history and culture. He tailored the trip to that day's weather to ensure the best view of Mt. Fuji. He also brought us to several lovely places away from the guide bus crowds. What a wonderful day!

Mr Taiji Endo & partner was very knowledgeable in the history of Hakone. They don’t bring us to any shop or factory product to earn some commission like other tour package in other country. I like it because it didn’t pressure. We’ve met the objective and we are lucky to have a very Professional, Punctual, Patience & Perfect for the family of 6 adults & 1 x Kids

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
We had a great day with Tom Harada in Odawara and the Mt.Fuji/Lake Kawaguchi areas. We definitely enjoyed the personalisation of a private tour, rather than a big coach tour. Tom is a great guide - very friendly and knowledgeable. He spoke English very well and helped us customise the tour to get the most out of it. We had a lovely day - thanks again Tom!

Private Tour: Chartered Car to Mt. Fuji Lake Kawaguchiko or Hakone and Lake Ashi
The tour guide Teddy, gave us a very nice tour and customized the itinerary to suit our requests. We saw the Hakone sulphur springs and took the ropeway (cable car) from there to the Lake Ashi. We took the the pirate ship for a tour of the lake. The weather in December a little cool but nice. We were able to see Mt. Fuji for a bit until the clouds came out and covered it up. My wife went to outlets while I went to an onsen (hot spring). We enjoyed the whole experience although the price is slightly high as we had to pay for the pirate ship and cable car in addition to the tour fee.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Receive discounted access to multiple attractions and regional transport, including buses, trains, cable cars, and boat trips, with a combined pass.

  • Some areas of the lake are wheelchair accessible.

  • For the best photo ops of Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji in the background, head to Moto-Hakone, south of the sightseeing boat pier, or hop on a sightseeing cruise.

  • Views of Mount Fuji tend to be clearer in the mornings and late afternoons.

  • Families enjoy a lake cruise on the Hakone pirate ship replica.

How to Get There

Many opt to visit Lake Ashi, in the Hakone area in Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshu, via bullet train from Tokyo, which stops at Odawara Station (followed by bus transfer), or as part of a guided tour with round-trip transport provided, usually by car, or a combination of coach and bullet train.

When to Get There

Warm and often-sunny spring (March–May) is the most popular time to visit Lake Ashi. Summer is quite hot and humid, fall can be very pleasant with unpredictable weather, and winter often sees snowfall around the lake and its surroundings.

Hakone Shrine

Many Japanese consider Hakone Shrine a holy place. They’ve worshiped the hills around it for thousands of years as a place where souls of the dead travel onward to the next world. The shrine’s current incarnation is more than a hundred years old, and visitors can tour the buildings and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
