Old Town and Beyond: A Tbilisi Silk Road Feast with Culinary Backstreets

star-5

As Georgian food culture slowly emerges from its Soviet-era deep freeze, Tbilisi’s chefs are looking beyond their country’s borders while also reviving and safeguarding Georgia’s unique culinary traditions. The open spirit of the Silk Road is back in town, and on this epic day of eating, we’ll get a taste of what it’s all about. Our day begins where Tbilisi got its start millennia ago, by the natural hot springs in the oldest part of the city. Here, a mosque, synagogue and Georgian Orthodox cathedral provide a panorama that tells much about the city’s diversity and its history as an important center of trade and culture and a key stop along the ancient Silk Road. Tbilisi’s strategic location made it a desirable place to occupy, and there’s no shortage of conquerors that passed through: Romans, Byzantines, Mongols, Khazars, Arabs, Persians, Ottomans, Russians and, finally, the Soviets.

Full-Day Private Tbilisi and Mtskheta Tour
"Greetings fellow travellers! |My now-husband and I took this tour, and we had a really lovely time! Our tour guide David from Gamarjoba Georgia the affiliate tour group of Viator in Georgia met us precisely on time at our hotel in Tbilisi on the morning of the tour, and waited for us until we were completely ready. He brought his personal car, and after helping us in, we drove nearby to pick up another couple, for a total of four tourists for that day's tour. David was absolutely wonderful. He was patient and friendly, very personable with us, and made sure to give us all the details he could, answering all of our questions along the way. He seemed to really enjoy doing this, and my husband and I actually ended up becoming quite good friends with him. His tour partner, Soso, was the one who had contacted me first after signing up for the tour. They both helped us out and were very friendly. David also informed us of ways to get out of paying high tourist prices when strolling through the streets of the town. This trip was actually what caused for my then-boyfriend and I to get married! We had such a beautiful time! David played a big role in that, as he was always available to answer any questions, even after the tour. He was genuinely concerned and interested in us as his friends. A couple of times my husband and I weren't able to converse with the locals about something, as we don't speak Georgian. Whenever we messaged him, despite having a family and a busy schedule, he always made himself available to us, right away. That was very touching and we deeply appreciated that. So we actually ended up making a great friend! We would love to visit again sometime, perhaps with more friends and family, and we would go with Gamarjoba Georgia with Viator again in an instant! We would also recommend it to all friends and family, as well as to anyone who wants to explore a very beautiful part of the Caucuses. The rich simplicity of this country is so pleasant. The arts, culture...so divine. Next time, my husband and I would love to be able to spend more time exploring other cities with this tour. But all in all, really, we had just a wonderful time. And we're so grateful for such a nice and dependable tour group, guide, and experience that is reasonably priced and exciting! My husband and I really owe our marriage to this trip and tour, and for that we shall always be deeply grateful, and shall cherish the fond memories in our hearts always. Please check it out when you get a chance--you will surely love it!! 3"..."

Private Tbilisi Old Town Walking Tour with Cable Car, Wine Tasting & Bread Bite
"We had the best experience on this walking tour: the route was amazing and gave a great overview of Tbilisi and George (our tour guide) was beyond exceptional. We saw all of the main attractions such as Mother of Georgia monument, sulfur baths, cute streets of Old Tbilisi and so much more. Wine tasting was great! And we enjoyed bread as well. George made sure we had time to rest if we needed a break, but he was also managing our time on the tour very well. One thing I would suggest while taking this walking tour around Tbilisi is to make sure you’re wearing an appropriate attire for the churches (skirts and headscarves for women, long pants for men). We saw several old churches on this walking tour, so better be prepared for that. Overall, it was by far my favorite walking tour and it made our time in Tbilisi much more meaningful. HIGHLY RECOMMEND."..."
