You will get a feel for how Japanese villagers lived in the Edo period when you see their houses preserved in their original condition, along with the tools and furniture that they used. You can also participate in seasonal activities, arts and crafts, or try out some old-fashioned toys. Your guide, a native English-speaker and long-time resident of Hida Takayama, will give you an in-depth explanation of the Folk Village and the exhibits there. After visiting the Folk Village, you will hike up the mountain behind it to the site of an old castle. From the top, you can see the whole of Takayama, as well as the mountains beyond. Your guide will point out edible plants and other interesting points along the way. After your hike, you can head down the hill to browse the shops or get refreshments.

Guarantee your entry to Hida Folk Village by pre-booking a ticket in advance. This saves time waiting in long ticket lines, so you have more time to explore. Once in the museum, discover 30 homes from the Edo Period, and walk around the grounds at your own pace. Other highlights include traditional crafts demonstrations, and seeing historic tools and cooking utensils on display.

The scenic park is located right in the middle of town. Depending on the season, there are a variety of edible plants and mushrooms that have long been important to the local cuisine. If you are lucky, you may see some wildlife, including serows, flying squirrels, and sometimes even bears. The tour ends in a lovely playground favored by local children, where the concession stand serves the best yakitori chicken in town. You can get ice cream, beer, or other refreshments after your hike. While the hiking is not too strenuous, there is a lot of climbing up and down. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes and bringing some water with you.
