Sigtuna

9 Olofsgatan, Sigtuna, Sweden

The Basics

Stroll through the town to admire ancient Viking churches and visit Sigtuna’s main street (Stora gatan) to peruse shops, galleries, and a museum containing Viking artifacts excavated from around town. Families with kids can also enjoy exploring the children's library at Märsta.

Due to the town’s rich Viking heritage, many Sigtuna tours focus on the area’s history. Day trips from Stockholm provide round-trip transportation and typically allow you to explore Viking ruins on the route between Stockholm and Sigtuna, such as ornately carved rune stones that once acted as medieval directional signs and the ancient Viking causeway of Jarlabankes bro at Täby.

Good overview of local Viking history
Gabriel was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot in our short time. Not knowing much at all about Viking history I found the tour fascinating and very worthwhile to see all of it up close. The town of Sigunta is quaint and historic and the stop at the coffeehouse at the end was a great way to cap the day. He also filled us in on the local Stockholm area as well and gave us tips on restaurants and museums to visit.

Private Half Day Tour: Viking History Trip from Stockholm Including Sigtuna
We had a wonderful tour with great, in-depth information on the history of Vikings and Sigtuna the city. We got lucky and were able to enter a church that had been closed for 5 years for renovations so that was amazing. Had many great conversations with our guide and had a really great day overall. Thank you again!

Viking History Small Group Tour from Stockholm: Half Day Including Sigtuna
This tour was, by far, the best experience I had during a four day visit to Stockholm. Nadia, our guide, was brilliant, with a huge depth of knowledge about the Vikings - and a remarkable ability to communicate that knowledge. Great sense of humour, and enthusiasm about her subject, too. She’s an absolute gem and Viator are fortunate to have her services as a guide. A memorable day!

Viking History Small Group Tour from Stockholm: Half Day Including Sigtuna
Our guide Quentin was very nice and knowledgable. The visit to the small old town was definitly our favourite and the lake nearby was beautiful. The tour is a bit overpriced however but maybe that's also due to the Stockholm area. Would recommend this if you're very interested in Vikings.

Private Full Day Viking History Tour from Stockholm Including Sigtuna and Uppsala
We spent a day touring Viking sites with Nadia. We travel frequently and have been to more countries than I can name. In all that time, we have never had a guide as bright, insightful, and fun as Nadia. She has a Ph.D in anthropology and a deep understanding of many cultures, including the Vikings. She is thoughtful and flexible with a great sense of humor. If you want an unforgetable day you will always remember with a smile on your face spend a tour anywhere in Sweden with Nadia.

Viking History Small Group Tour from Stockholm: Half Day Including Sigtuna
Informative excursion to some Viking historic sites. Our guide was an archaeologist who specialized in that period. Well done. Highly recommended. Certainly a must for all of those who know little about Vikings and their impressive history and accomplishments.

Viking History Small Group Tour from Stockholm: Half Day Including Sigtuna
I booked a half-day tour the night prior to my arrival in Stockholm and Angus was almost the first person I met in Sweden! I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was the only one on the tour - what a luxury! Angus picked me up at my hotel in Gamla Stan where I stopped by to drop my backpack, and our adventure started! The excursion was extremely well thought-through and methodically depicted Vikings and their society, beliefs, traditions and habits. There were many stops where we got out of the car and walked up to the burial mounds, runic stones, a church and an ancient parliament place. We had a nice lunch break at the local café and I had a chance to ask Angus questions about modern life in Sweden. I am very thankful to Angus and Jonathan for a unique chance to visit Swedish countryside and learn about Viking heritage.

Sigtuna History

Sweden's first coins were minted here in the 10th and 11th centuries, and Sigtuna also served an important role in the creation of the Church of Sweden. Sigtuna was the center of Christianity in medieval Sweden and has seven churches clustered close together—although they are now in various states of disrepair, the Viking inscriptions in the churchyards can still be clearly seen. The town’s gridded layout also belies its origins in the Viking age.
