Hook Lighthouse Tours

Hook Lighthouse
Built more than 800 years ago, Hook Lighthouse is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. Picturesquely perched on Hook Head, at the tip of Hook Peninsula, the squat black-and-white-striped structure marks the eastern entrance to Waterford Harbour. Explore the tower and learn about the history of the lighthouse.

The Basics

Made with local limestone, Hook Lighthouse is four stories high. Join one of the tours that begin every half hour, and climb the 115 steps to the balcony to savor the 360-degree view. Learn from your guide about the history of light-keeping at Hook Lighthouse, and gain insight into how its keepers lived throughout the centuries. You’ll also get to meet St. Dubhan and William Marshal (“the greatest knight)” in life-size hologram form.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Hook Lighthouse is a must-do for pharologists and those interested in Irish maritime history.
  • The tower isn’t wheelchair-accessible.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available in the café.
  • Wear closed shoes and warm clothing.
  • The lighthouse hosts special events such as cookery demonstrations, historical re-enactments, and themed art workshops—check the lighthouse website for details.

How to Get There

At the tip of County Wexford’s Hook Peninsula, the lighthouse is on the R734 road. It’s a 40-minute drive from New Ross, 50 minutes from Wexford, and an hour from Waterford. Free parking is available.

When to Get There
Open at 9:30am every day, the lighthouse closes at 5:30pm, 6pm, or 7pm, depending on the season. Tours usually depart every half hour. Consider timing your visit with one of the annual festivals or family events that take place at the lighthouse, such as the Maritime Matters Festival in May or the Pirate Festival in July. The lighthouse is closed December 18–25.

Visitor Center

After you’ve finished touring the lighthouse, head over to the visitor center to enjoy a homemade snack in the café. Located in the houses of the former lightkeepers, the center also contains a gift shop, where you can browse an extensive collection of local history books and maritime-themed souvenirs for sale.
