The Basics

This ancient city is home to an incredible number of ruins in varying states. The site is best explored with a guide who can help shed light on the function and significance of the various structures. Guided tours of the site depart from Istanbul, Izmir, Bodrum, Selçuk, and Kuşadasi.

Travelers who want to avoid the stress of making travel arrangements to Ephesus can take tours from Istanbul, which typically include air transport from Istanbul to Izmir, and ground transfers from Izmir to Ephesus. Many tours combine a visit to Ephesus with a trip to the Virgin Mary's House (Meryemana), a former house turned shrine where it is believed the Virgin Mary spent her last days.

Wonderful visit to Ephesus with a great guide.
Our guide, Ismail, was friendly, courteous and very informative. He set the perfect pace to accommodate our family group of 3 generations. We couldn't have asked for a better guide.

Ephesus Trip from Istanbul
This trip met all of our expectations for the day. On time pickup at our hotel in Sultanahmet, prompt pickup in Izmir, English speaking guide, and we saw everything we could want! Fatima was fantastic, truly knew the area well and also helped avoid the large groups by moving the day’s activities around a bit based on what she knew. Well worth the time and money to have this private tour versus doing it solo or as part of a large group.

Private Ephesus Day Tour From Bodrum
Our tour guide, Mustafa, was extremely knowledgeable about the area. His talent to weave in time for questions, ask us questions, and generally chat with us felt just right! We would love to hire him again for a future tour.

Excellent tour and worth every Euro!! Comes with driver and tour guide. Sergen is an amazing tour guide and I highly recommend him!! His knowledge is extensive and he provides a very thorough explanation of the ruins and history of areas visited. We moved from site to site at our own pace and we learned a lot from Sergen!!! Visited all the sites and still had time after to do some shopping on our own at the port of Kusadasi. Would do this again.....

5 - 6 Hours Mini Group (Max 10 pax) Excursion to Ephesus with PRIVATE OPTION
Awesome tour. Alex did a great job showing us the history of Eohuses. He also allowed us to experience other Turkish experiences that were not included in the tour package. He went above and beyond and gave our family an experience of a lifetime, and allowed us to enjoy Turkey.

Ephesus Trip from Istanbul
Exceptional tour! The tour company took care of everything from booking airport transfers to flights and everything to do with the tour. It was hassle-free and perfect for my son and I. Fatima is an excellent guide- she's informative, helpful, accommodating and has a great cheerful personality. The sites we went to were spectacular, the traditional food was great and we got to do some shopping as well. Thank you for a memorable day!

Small Group Ephesus and Sirince Day Tour from Selcuk
Our tour guide was really exceptional—personable, knowledgeable, charming. It respected the notion of a small tour (six ppl that day) as opposed to the many tour groups from cruise ships that also visit. My reason for giving four stars is that we spent a lot of time visiting shops—three hours in three shops total which was exhausting. That seems to be the way of things in Turkiye but nonetheless a thorn in my side.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Ephesus is a must for history and archaeology buffs.

  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, and ample water as there is little shade at the site.

  • Much of Ephesus has uneven, stone surfaces that can make wheelchair access difficult. It is possible to enter the site via the lower gate and to see some of the ruins, including the Library of Celsus.

Highlights of Ephesus

Perhaps the most emblematic and oft-photographed ruin in Ephesus is the Library of Celsus. Built between AD 110 and AD 135, the library was originally three stories tall. Much of the structure was destroyed during a 10th-century earthquake, though the spectacular facade has been reconstructed. Though the Temple of Artemis is probably Ephesus’ most fabled structure—this colossal marble construction is said to have been more than four times the size of the Parthenon—only a lone column remains standing.
