The Basics

Most tours of Saint John include a stop at the Saint John City Market, whether you opt for a food-themed tour, city walking tour, or private guided tour. Tours of the broader Bay of Fundy area sometimes stop at the market and may also visit the fishing village of St. Martins, Reversing Falls Rapids, and local area wineries. For cruise ship passengers, most Saint John shore excursions include a stop at the city market.

This was a great tour by Art, a retired school teacher and native to St. John.

Art was enthusiastic and accommodating. His grasp of local history was terrific. Our only regret is that we forgot to offer him a tip!

Art was our tour guide. We were late and so we had a personal tour (3 of us) with him. Very knowledgeable, very nice, lots of stories and anecdotes!

Saint John New Brunswick Roots Tour
This tour was so informative and great. It was like having a private car for the four of us. Our driver was a native of the area and knew about everything. Seen everything expected and more. The winery was so quaint and learned a lot about process of wine. It tasted very good. Went to small family local restaurant for lunch, home made food. Seen the reverse rapids twice one flowing one way then we returned and seen the rapids moving the other direction. Don't miss this tour.

Wonderful, wonderful day. Went through the country side saw all the beautiful fall foliage with narration by a wonderful guide. The winery was fascinating and the wine was good. NOT sweet gooey stuff...even the sweet ones. Great tour, great guide and highly recommended!

Saint John Walking Tour
A very interesting tour of downtown St John. Historical information was provided that brought to light the quite amazing history of the city, including the 1877 fire that destroyed 90 of the city. Our guide answered our questions, and if we asked one where he was not sure of the correct answer, he told us so. The tour was well worth while.

We took a really well paced walking tour of Saint John with Byron. He took us past places of interest, pointed out various architectural styles and brought it all around by connecting the history with all we saw. Interesting, informative and with the perfect drop off at the city market. Loved it! Byron was pretty great as a guide. Our family of four highly recommends!

Saint John Walking Tour
It was easy to find our tour. The directions were very clear. We had the best tour guide. His name was Dave and he has even written a book about Saint John. He was very accommodating. The town itself isn't as exciting as some other places we have been. We mostly looked at buildings and talked about the history of the town. We did end in the Market Place. The only down side which had nothing to do with the tour or Dave, was that for this native Californian, it was so cold! It distracted me a bit from the tour. Our tour was at 8:00am. Maybe later in the day when it is warmer.

History of Saint John City Market

A designated National Historic Site of Canada, the Saint John City Market has a long and storied history. Two fires, in 1837 and 1841, reduced the market to rubble before the current incarnation opened in 1876. The building then survived the Great Fire of 1877, which razed the city of Saint John just a year after the market opened.
