The Basics

Most Tivoli tours departing from Rome include visits to both Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa. At the latter, tour archaeological ruins of temples, libraries, and thermal baths, including the Maritime Theater, the grand Piazza d’Oro, the Imperial Palace, and the Canopus. At Villa d’Este—commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito—admire views from the Vialone Terrace and the picture-perfect Oval Fountain. To get the most out of your visit, opt for a full- or half-day guided tour through the Lazio countryside.

Great day in Tivoli!
This tour was such a wonderful tour and a relaxing way to get outside of the Rome heat. We really enjoyed our guide Giusseppe. He was nit just a guide but “The Guide”! He was very knowledgeable about Tivoli and we enjoyed his lunch recommendations. The only tip I would have for this tour is to give about 15 more minutes to explore the gardens at Villa de Este. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable day!

Heritage Site: Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli Tour from Rome
Our guideFabio was very informative and social. In addition we had a terrific driver. Hadrian’s villa was the Disney world of its day except for 1 person.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Giuseppe was our guide, and he was absolutely lovely. The pace of the tour was great, we were able to learn, take heaps of photos, and have a nice lunch. If you're looking to save money you could probably skip the added lunch, but we enjoyed it (bread w/ olive oil to start, spaghetti w/ mushrooms+tomato sauce for the primi, slice of meat+fries for the secondi, and frozen italian ice for dessert). All and all, we'd do it again!

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Joseph was informative, accommodating and professional. I liked his book where he showed what the ruins may have looked like in ancient times. His tour was well-paced.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome: Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Giuseppe was an amazing and attentive English speaking tour guide. As a Tívoli native he had much knowledge of history, restaurants and shopping. We purchased the tour with lunch and I do not recommend that. Save your money, grab your own bite and see more of the town. The food was mediocre and overpriced.

Tivoli Day Trip from Rome with Lunch Including Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este
Great day trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting. Both sites were worth seeing and the tour guide helped the ruins come alive. And, the fountains at villa d’este were so beautiful. Definitely go!

Private Tour:Tivoli Villa D'Este
It was beautiful! However, it has a ton of stairs. Also, unless you are very interested in the stories behind the fountains, save your money on the audio guide. You won't miss it, and it allows you to just take in the beauty.

Villa d'Este is amazing, the most beautiful garden we have ever seen. This is a MUST if you visit Rome. Our tour guide Giuseppe (Joseph) is great.

Tour to Tivoli, villa d'Este, half day from Rome
Tivoli villa has beautiful gardens and fountains. It was nice to get out of the city and see some of the country side. After visiting the villa it is clear why they are a UNESCO world heritage site. The self guided tour provided by the villa was sufficient to understand and gain appreciation for the villa. Tivoli is very cute and fun to walk around as well. I recommend this trip to those who want to see more of the area outside of Rome.

I cant recall our guides name but she was fantastic. This place is full of history and considering its age is very well preserved.

Small-Group Tour of Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este from Rome
My 2 adult children and I had a wonderful experience walking the grounds of both estates. Our tour guide, Julia, was wonderful, and made the experience fun and enjoyable for us.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A skip-the-line ticket for Hadrian’s Villa allows travelers to maximize their time at the countryside villa.

  • Choose a full-day tour that includes lunch to enjoy a meal in the classical city of Tivoli.

  • If you don’t wish to travel by train, book a charter tour or a private tour that includes transportation.

  • Both the Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa are wheelchair accessible, although Tivoli has some cobblestoned streets.

When to Get There

The Villa d'Este is open from 8:30am until the late afternoon or evening depending on the season, while Hadrian's Villa has slightly shorter hours, again depending on the season. Given Tivoli’s many gardens, spring is a great time to visit.

What to do in Lazio, Italy

Like Rome, Tivoli is set in the Italian region of Lazio. Although the Italian capital is the main draw for most visitors, take some time to visit the rejuvenating thermal waters of the Baths of Bagnaccio or the tumbling Monte Gelato waterfalls. And the weird and wonderful world of the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo (Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo) is an underrated gem.
