20-minute drive from Valladolid on highway 295, direction Tizimin, Ek Balam, The Yucatan

The Basics

Situated about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the popular tourist destination of Chichen Itza, Ek Balam isn’t quite as popular as its massive neighbor, making it less crowded. The attraction offers a chance to imagine Maya culture as it was thousands of years ago.

Ek Balam tours typically include hotel pickup and drop-off, and leave from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and other Riviera Maya destinations. Excursions range from a half day to a full day, and often visit other popular attractions such as Tulum Archaeological Site, the ruins at Chichen Itza, and nearby cenotes (underground lakes). Private tours are available for a personalized experience, and some day trips include a personal photographer.

Nice variety of cultural activities
Highly recommend this tour as Ek Balam and Hubiku or not included on most other tours. You are still able to climb the small pyramid at Ek Balam and it is smaller and less touristy than Chichen Itza. Wish we had a longer visit at Hubiku but the lunch here is delicious. We did have a short swim in the cenote. We also learned a lot about the Mayan culture.

Private Tour: Chichen Itza, Ek Balam Cenote, and Tequila Factory
Such a great excursion, Emilio and Willy were absolutely amazing. We had the best time the Cenotes were better than we imagined and Chichén Itza and Ek Balam are incredible. Emilio is so knowledgeable and it’s fun hearing about his culture.

Ek Balam Majestic Mayan Ruins and Cenote Tour
The Cenote was amazing - we even rappelled and zip lined. The Ek Balam was incredible - can't believe we climbed to the top, but so glad we did! Our tour guide/driver was so very good - could not have asked for better. At Ek Balam the Mayan guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history. Very professional and personable staff all around. Wow!

Ek Balam Majestic Mayan Ruins and Cenote Tour
We really enjoyed this trip. Luis was a great tour guide he was very attentive to our needs. He always checked in with us to see if we needed anything and he shared information throughout the tour. The driver Ricardo was very nice also, he stopped for us to use the restroom when we needed. The cave was gorgeous and I'm glad we chose this tour. I used this company for two different tours, this tour was fantastic the other one was awful. This tour guide made all the difference.

Ek Balam, Mayan Cenote From Cancun
Fantastic guide!! Beautiful cenote and delicious food after. The ride is long, but nodding off or headphones and a good playlist or book makes the time pass.

Private Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, and Ik Kil Cenote, Lunch
Our tour guide, Alvaro, was amazing. He asked questions and suggested an itinerary to meet our interests. His knowledge of the area and history was remarkable. Alvaro has been a tour guide for 22 years and it came through in every aspect of our tour. This was our second time visitng Chichen-Itza and Alvaro provided information and insight we did not get the first time. Ek Balam was wonderful, it is less visited and smaller than Chichen-Itza and provides and look into everyday Mayan life with some parts of the site still undiscovered and uneartherd by archeologists.

Ek Balam and Chichen Itza tour

Private Tour: Chichen Itza, Ek Balam Cenote, and Tequila Factory
It’s ambitious to fit this much in one day but it was a really excellent mix of activities and if we hadn’t have been stuck in traffic for an additional two hours at the end of the day it would have been pretty easy. The guide and driver were great (JJ and Carlos). JJ has a ton of knowledge! Only change would be to skip the shopping stop even though it was a good place to shop, but it cut into the cenote time. Also JJ didn’t have a solid plan for lunch and the buffet at the Ik Kil cenote looked pretty meh so we just did the snack bar.

Ek Balam and Valladolid Private Tour
We hired a private car with drivers to take us to Ek Balam, Cenote Maya and Valladolid. The trip was five stars from start to finish. The drivers were polite in the extreme and gave us a safe, comfortable ride. Upon arriving at Ek Balam, they introduced us to our English-speaking guide whose name I wish I could remember because he was amazing. A native Mayan speaker, he spoke both English and Spanish fluently. He was an expert on the archaeological site, providing in-depth explanations of what we were seeing, including the Mayan hieroglyphs. It was truly impressive. This is a lesser known site but all the more special because of the quality of the tour and the fact that it was not overrun with tour groups. We proceeded to the colonial city of Valladolid for a little walking and shopping and then to Cenote Maya. We opted not to swim but enjoyed photographing the site. The lunch buffet that was included in our tour was superb. The drivers told us the food was excellent and they did not exaggerate. I could tell they were really looking forward to the meal. Frankly, it was some of the best food we had during our week-long stay in the area. Loved this tour. Highly recommend.
