Aquarium of Rhodes Tours and Activities

Since opening its doors in 1936, the Aquarium of Rhodes has evolved into a miniature Mediterranean, amassing a vast variety of native fish and sea creatures housed in some 40 climate-controlled tanks. Octopuses, crabs, sea turtles, and Mediterranean monk seals are among the eclectic inhabitants of this popular family attraction.
The Basics
While on the smaller side, the Aquarium of Rhodes still ranks among the island’s best attractions for families. In addition to animal displays and a touch tank where visitors can interact with various marine critters, the aquarium also houses a facility to care for sea turtles and seals rescued from the surrounding area. The beach to the east of the aquarium offers calm waters ideal for swimming, while the western shore attracts windsurfers.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The Aquarium of Rhodes is a popular attraction for families with young children.
- Give yourself 30 minutes to an hour to tour the aquarium exhibits.
- Bring along a swimsuit, towel, and sun protection to enjoy the aquarium’s neighboring beach.
- Two flights of steps make the facility inaccessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
How to Get There
The Aquarium of Rhodes is in the New Town on the northernmost tip of the island. The best way to get there is to take a taxi or drive.
When to Get There
Plan to visit the aquarium in the late morning or early afternoon, leaving yourself some time to enjoy the neighboring beach after your visit. Expect the facility to be busy during July and August.
Architecture of the Rhodes Aquarium
The small aquarium is housed in an art deco building dating back to the 1930s, when the Italians (then rulers of Rhodes) built it as a hydrobiological research station. The interior resembles an underwater cave, while the exterior features nautical details such as porous rock, colored pebbles, seashells, and porthole windows.
