While its spectacular volcanic landscape is Iceland’s biggest tourist draw, it’s not its only lure. Reykjavik is fast-gaining a reputation for its excellent nightlife scene. See below for ideas on how to spend those bright summer—or long winter—nights in Iceland’s capital city.
Bar and Club Crawls
Pub crawls are an Icelandic tradition—so much so that there is even a local word for one: rúntur, which translates to “round tour.” Many of Reykjavik’s coolest bars are located in and around Laugavegur, the city’s main shopping street. On Friday and Saturday nights, this busy downtown thoroughfare is elbow-to-elbow with revelers.
Northern Lights Tours
For nighttime entertainment of a different nature, opt for a Northern Lights tour. Cruises, bus, and small-group 4WD tours all depart from the capital, taking you away from the bright city lights to the countryside, where they have a better chance of spotting the aurora borealis. Northern Lights tours typically run only from mid-September to mid-April.
Beer Tours
For a country in which beer was banned until 1989, Iceland sure seems to have a soft spot for the stuff. In the years since the ban was lifted, the Icelandic craft beer scene has prospered with more and more Icelandic brewers getting creative with their alcoholic output. Take a tour of breweries in Reykjavik, and taste the latest craft creations from domestic producers.
